_—_— e ———— THE CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1872 . BRIDGEPORT REDEEMED. The Model Slaughter House Movement. Satisfaction of Property Holders Thereaway. 1, unliko delighed Ethiopia in Seripturs, the long unsavory region of Bridgeport has mo reason to ‘‘stretch out her hands” for what has been already assured her in the way of relief, she can at least take her hands from her offended nostrils, and our citizens cando the same, and enjoy the future southwest Pprairie winds of summer untainted by sleughter-house offal. When this Mcdel Slaughter House, now taken strongly in hand Dy the opulent and pow- + erful Union Stock Yards Company, is finished, Bridgeport stenches will become only tradic tional, and it will be impossible to suggest to posterity how vilothey were. Dr. Bauch de- serves alaurel wreath for his vietory, now well secured, and the advocates of licensed stenches must fold their tents and leave. The utmost satisfaction prevails in the wide- spreading southwest quarter of the city at the ‘p:oclamation of emancipation pronounced, and a1 immedinte effect upon the development of that large neighborhood is promised, and igevitable. Our readers will have noticed, in ¢he report of Sanitary Superindendent Rauclh, a description of proposed works to be ereated, which ehall combine all the lriest improvements in slaughtering enimals, and be, indeed, 2model to be copied pr pll parties interested. The establishmer’, {t is now mado certain, is to be located nea, the Union Stock Yards, and will e construcLed and operated by the Union Stock Yard Corapany. The¢ propose to slaughter about 300 hesd of cst'io daily; the dressed ment will bo delivered 7.z the city depots in refrigerator cars, and tho affal, blood, etc., manufactured immediatelyinto = valuable fertilizer, in a manner entirely inof- Fensive, this Iatter to be accomplished by the Whelpley & Stover process, which hus been fally indorsed by the Board of Heslth and other city officials. It is understood that the plans will be completed ina fow days. Enough has al- ready been accomplished to warrant the expecta- tion that ground will be broken about Jan. 1, and the works completed not later than May 1. Tt is in contemplation to ultimately increaso the capueity of these works €0 as to slaughter a L\rgo proportion of the cattle now shig\pcd ZEast, and forward the dressed meat to New York and other Eastern cities:” Dr. Rauch is deserv- ing tho thanks of tho community for having accomplished this object ; and it i3 evident from the tenor of his reJ:urt that every slaughter and ‘packing-houso in the ci.y will be obliged, sooner orlater, to adopt some method by which the nuigance crented shall be effectuslly abolished. Tp to this time, the resistance to the redemption of Bridgeport and the relief of our whole city from an unwholesome nuisance has apparently been expended by scribbling letter writers and protests from bogus scientists, though most of them must have written with one hand holding the nose, while the other drove the pen. Now that a farnace hotter than that of Shadrach, AMegkach, and Abednego is to be heated for the destructiyn of sll sources of evil odors, public opinion will beat a still hotter one for those who I;gcu‘se aresort toit. Attachment of Philip Arnold’s Props= erty at Elizabethtown, Ky.— Suit Brought for the Recovery of Nearly IXalf o Million of Dollars, Elizabethtos Ey. 10) Correspondence the bl Coutier St & The diamond frauds which have engaged the wires of the Associated Press from the Pacific coast for several days, have at last: culminated in one of the largest civil suits that was ever brought in tho Hardin Circuit Court. Quite 5 sensation was created on our streots, this marning, when it was noised sround thab the safe at his residence, and the valuables of Philip Arnold, Esq., in the bank of Thomas Polk & Co., bankers at this place, had been attached by the Sheriff. To gee the property of a reputed millionaire attached by an ofticer of the law, was enoagh to cresto & sensation, snd it did it to perfection. At tho Clerk’s office of tho Hardin Circnit_Court is & long petition, in which one Wm. M. Lent, of San Francisco, desires equity £o return to him three hundred and fifty thousand dollaras from Philip Arnold, John Slack, and others, which he claims ‘was obtained from him fraudulently. The peti- tion is reduced to o nutshell in the following affidavit for an attachment, which is filed in the caso: THE AFFIDAVIT. Wm. AL Lent vs. Philip Arnold, John Slack, etc.—Plaintifl’s affidavit for attachment. Hardin Circuit Court. The plaintiff, Wm. . Lent, ssys that ho has this day commenced sn action in equity in this court against the defendants, P‘}u.l p Arnold, John Slack, Mary E. Arnold, 8. B. Thomas, J. 1. Polk and J. B. Thomas, &c., and here refers tohis said petition in equity and makes tho same part hereof. The nature of plaintif's claim 1n this action is to recover from thedefen- dants, Philip Arnold and John Slack, the sum of 350,000, which smount was obtsined from him by thom by fraud and by fraudulent repre- sentations sde by them to plaintiff in refer~ enco to dismonds, rubies, snd emerslds being found upon lands in & certain district of country, to-wit, in Colorado Territory, which frandulont representations were madein pursuance of a fraudulent conspixu? and combination be- tween said Arnold and Slack and sllics, for the purpose of decciving and misleading the plaintiff sod the poblic. generally in re- feronce to the value of said lands, and by means of which false and fraudulent representations eaid Arnold and Slack fraud- ulently obtained from the plaintiff the consider- ation of the ealo by them to plaintiff of the in- formation of the locality of said land and of said pretended right of diacovery of the locality of 6aid precions stones, when, in fact, said rodre- sentations were all wholly false_and fraudulant. No such diamonds, rubies, and emeralds wero found upon or in any such land, but wero scattered and planted thereon and therein by said Arnold and Black and their confed- erates, for the fraudulent purpose of decoiving and dofrauding _tho plaintif and tho public at large, and inducing plaintiff and the public at large to bellove that said diamonds and other precious stones were found upon and in said lands in their natural formation and pro- duction. Plaintiff refers to eaid petition for & n]z}m detailed statement of the nature of his claims. Plaintiff’s claim is just. The amount which he believes ho ought to recover from the defend- ents, Philip Arnold and John Slack, is the sum of $330,000. Plaintiff says that the defendant, Philip Ar- nold, who is & resident of Hardin County, Ky., has left the county of his residence to avoid the service of & summons upon him, 80 conceals ‘himself that a summons cannot be served upon him ; hes s0ld, conveyed, and otherwisedisposed ‘o his property, and suffered and permitted it to Lo solg, with the fraudulent intent to cheat, hinder, and delsy his creditors, and is sbout to sell, convey, and otherwice disposa of his prop- oty with tho frandulont intent to cheat, hinder, an delng Lis creditors, B. H. Dristow says he is tho agent and attor- noy of the plaintiff, Wm. M. Lent, who is absent from Hardin County, and from the State of Xentucky, and he believes tho statement in the foregoing aftidsvits are trae. B. H. Bastow, Bubscribed and sworn to beforome, by B. H. Bristow, the 9th day of December, A- D. 1872. . M. Fraize, Clerk. 5o onds the document which caused the flut- ter in our town this inoming, and vhich will be read with at interest {rom the Atlantic io the Pacifie. There aro two sides to all cases, and especially to suits in equity, and as Mr. Lent has had hissay on paper, the next in order is the answer of the defend- ants. It gives a fine opening for the legal talont of our vicinity; and all our lawyers are looking very wisely this morning, indicating that they would win the case, no matter which side they aro employed upon. Among the Iawyers already cmployed aro General B. H. Bristow, of Phila- delphis, end Hon. John M. Harlan ‘snd A. E. ‘Willson, Esq., of Louisville, for the plaintiffs. A bond was given by the_ plaintiff in the sum of $750,000 in order to obtain an attachment which was levied on the articles mentionod above, at 10 p. m. last night. Alldoy yesterday the wires between Louisville and Ban Francisco were kopt busy making preparations for tho commencement of this suit, the telegraph bill falling not much short of $300, MUNN & SCOTT. Another Aet of the New Local Drama. The Ex-Elevator Men Taken Into Custody to Prc- vent Their Escape from the City. It having transpired that Ira Y. Munn and George L. Scott wore about to leave the city, probubly yesterday evening, steps wero taken for their arrest jusf beforo the closing of the Courts. Botween 3 and 4 o'clock, the following potition and affidavit were placed in tho hands of Judge Drummond : Your petitioners, John P, MeGregor and George D, Lincoln, respectfully represent that they are informed ond blieve that Ira Y. Munn and George L. Scott, twb of snid bankrupts, ave about to dopart from thil Stato, with no certainty of tholr roturning; _that sald bankrupts have .not yet been examined by satd Assignees, excopt upon a fow points, and their testimony will * be_indispensablo in many things relating!to said cstate, and to snswer- ing to such orders as the Gourt may hereafter make in this caso, Your petitioners, therefore, pray that said Munn & Scott may bo compelled to give bond, with sufficicnt_security, for their appearanco beforo the Register, in Court, whenever the same may bo To- quired by said Register, in such sum as the Courtmay determino. George D. Lincoln's affidavit, accompanying the petition, avers that within the past four weoks the said Munn told bim that he was going to Jeave, sesterday, for some point on the Cen- tral Pacific Railroad, or in Californis ; and that Mrs. Scott told him that 88 soon as their oxempt property waa made over to them, she and her husband intended to £0 to some point in tho Western Territorics, fn accordance with the petition and affidavit, the Marshal was ordered, at 4 o'clock yesterday after- noon, to orrest the said Munn & Scott, and to hold them until they gave bail, to be fixed by the District Judge, and as the Judgo left for his resi- denco ghortly afterwards, those gentlomen will robably have been under arrest all night, and be rought up bofore the Judge to give the neces- sary bail morning. PETITION OF JESSE HOYT. On the petition of Jesse Hoyt, of Now York, vestorday filed in the banlruptey side of tho District Court, praying for the sale of the prop- erty assignod £o him by Ira Y. Munn, which has Dbeen the subject of 80 many examinations, tho Assignees iu the estate were, yesterday, ruled to shot causo why theprayer of the petitioner should not be te @ rule gays that the deposi- tions taken hersin may bo read by either party, and that either party may produce affidavits. The petition contains no facts not already made public in these columes. It will be remembered that the proporty principaily mortgaged consista of the Munn & Scott_elevator, and undivided three-fourths of the Northwestern elevator, and an undivided five eixteenths of the City and Union elevators. 'The petitioner alleges as tha ground for an immediate sale that he is unable to place any insuranco on theelevators in conse~ quence of distrust occasioned byrecent proceed- ings, and that the property is inadequate securi- ty for tho money dne ium , amounting to $350,~ presence and ‘What It Cost Horace Greeley to Sign Jeif. Davis’ Bail Bond. From ths Hartford Courant. “The American_Conflict,” written by Horaco Greeloy, was published in thig city by O. D, Cose & Co., who were compelled, atter the first volume was in type, to' keep presses running night and day to supply to demands of agents, No book proviously published had met with such a rapid sale, excepting, iIm-hnps Mrs. Stowe's famous novel. Nearly, if not qu!te, two hundred and fifty thonsand copies of the first volume wero disposed of, and the sale was still going on sucecsatully when the second volume appesred. The publishers wero justified in supposing that the second would have as exten- sive & sale 8as the first volune, as every one who had purchased the book for = its historical value would surely got the completo thing. When tho sale of the second volume had reached some 60,000 or 70,000 copies, and lightning presses wererushing it off by handreds 0vegyul%:y to meet the urgent call of “agents in the Mr. Greeley signed the bail bond of Jeff. Davis, and from that _time the salo virtuallyceased. That stroke of his pen cnt off thousands of dollars from the profits of tie publishers, who had depended upon the sale of the first volume to cover expenses, and 0X- pected thoir reward out of the sale of the sece ond, and it took also s good deal of money out of Mr. Greeley's pocket. Ina letter of Ar, Greeloy's, mads public since his doath, he alind ed to two notable things in his lifo, first, that he threw sway the United Stotes Senatorsbip when he published an article in the Tribune, following close upon the end of the war, in favor of universal amnesty, and, second, throw away a fortune when he signed the bon for the release of Jefferson Davis. Undoubted- ly the last statement has reference to the sale of *“The American Conflict.” and that he did sacrifice & fortune, or & good part of ome, is evident from the fact that so far asthesale extended he was gnid by the publishers_$50,000. Out of this proboblyit did not cost him over $5,000 for the work of assistants, so that he cleared a handsome sum; but it is supposed that he eaved only & very little of it, as ha was coustantly giviog, giving, giving—and very many times to people who ungaseti ‘apon his credulity. e book is now sold to some extent, netting to Mr. Greeley before he died only about £175 a year, however. It never recovercd tho fatal blow it got when the autograph of the great philosopher helped to release the sutocrat of the great rebellion. The Baggage Smasher’s Xdeal Rail« road Passcngers From the Bridgeport (Conn.) Standard. Fourteen years 430, o regularly checked trunk arrived by one of the trains at the Bridgeport depot, and, no one calling for it, it was placed in the baggage-room. No person called to claim the trunk for eloyon years. At the expiration of that timo, & gentleman appeared at the baggage- room snd inquired of the bsggage-master if ho hed in his possession a_trunk that came to Bridgoport by rail, some eleven years sgo. Upon being answered in the affirmative, he presented s duplicate check, and inguired how much he had to pay for tho storage. The baggaga-master examined the check, found it would be sbout §2 for the eleven years. The gentleman said the prico was satisfactory, and he would call the noxt day, pay up the cost of the storage, and take the trunk awny. He then left. Three more years have now passed, but the gentloman has not returned for the trunk, and it still awaits an owner at the baggage store-rooms of the New X(z;k, New Haven & ford Railroad, in this city. e Singular Results of o Fall. From the Bridgeport (Conn.) Standard. Au sccident, attended with singular results, occurred in Easton not long since. ~ Mr. Thomss Wade, aresident of that placo, fell down a fight of stairs, strikiog his side scross the rail nosr the bottom. He experienced no inconvenience from the fall, excepting the loss of hia voico. For two or three days his power of utterance was entirely gone. He could not speak, even ina whisper, and was obliged to make his wants known and converse with his friends, by means of o slate and pencil. At the expiration” of that time his voice came again, and he immediately folt a weakness in his side asif the life had doparied from it. 1. B Hogao, Judgo Cincinnati, tendere offico on Wednosday.
