The Initer began with an exhortation, in which occurred the following pussnges:— “i'Thq father and mother of this child now pres~ ent Qesire us o join with them in giving thanks tothe Lord and giver of life for RHis precious gift to them ; for =il His mercy in supporting them under their anxicties, and for grantlng o ‘happy iseue out of much pain and sorrow. By this cur solemn gervice, we would, as it were, dedifate and con- secrate this infant’s soul sud body to the service of God.” Then followed prayers for the parents and cbild, with responses from the choir. After the singing of a hymn, Mr. Voysey turned to the father and mother snd asked, *What is the pzme of thischild 7 The father answered, but the name was innudible. The congregation stood all this timo and here the “order of gervice " pregcribes that * the minister shall take the child in his arms” and eay certnin words *in the name of the congregation.” Accordmg- Iy, Mr. Voysey took the infant, and, resting it on his left arm, eaid: “ We receive this child, (neming him) at the hands of his father and mother, and here with one ° sccord solemnly dedicate him fo the servico of Almighty God our Heavenly Father. . . . Mr. Voysey, addressing the infant by his newly-scquired name, said: _“1We give thee welcome in the name of the Lord. A DUNMMY FOR A HORSE. Result of an Experiment in New Yori. From the New York Tribune. The car that was placed on the Bleecker sireet line, last Saturday, is known as the Remington street stezm car. It was invented sbout two yoars ago, in Newark, and ono has since been Funning on the Bloomfield, N. J.,road. Tho Remington Company has manufactured only two cars, one of which 18 now running on the road at Tion, N. Y., thogh tho track has only slight curves and small grodes ; and the other is the car now in tho Bleecker Street Company’s shops in this city. The car at Llion has accommo- dated forty passengers, and has drawn a second car contnining the same number. The car hos run 2t & speed of twenty-five miles an hour with & light load, and on s smooth, straight track, Iv hes the sppearance of an ordinsry street car, and is of the eame eize. The me- chinery by which itis propelled occupies the front platform, is entirely separated from the interior, and also invisible from that point. It is provided with acompound engine of five- horse power, which can bo incressed to twenty- Thorse power withont any complicated mechen- ism. e cylinders are placed under the front platform in” direct connection with the forward axle. On this platform is a smell box conteining coal = sufficient for half a day. It is_eaid that the ‘car can run ‘The water fi‘i miles with 200 pounds of coal. tank is beneath the rear platform, the water being heated from the exhausted steam. The car itself is heated by means of steam pipes run- ning beneath the seats on each side of the car. No unpleasant heat is experienced from pro; imity to the boiler, as it is separated from the interior by a nonconducting partition. The en- gineer swgs the car by suddenly roversing tho engire. Even when the car is running at the rete of six miles an hour, it can be stopped within twenty-five feet, and with the aid of ‘brakes, within half of its own length. Two men only ate required on 2 car, & conductor and on - engineer. 1t now remains to describe the recent experi- ment, John T. Conover, the President of ths Bleecker Street Company, has never teken any active measures in this “direction, norwould ho have done =0 if the horse disease had not caused such general panic. On the first,_sppearance of the disease he telegraphed to the Remington Company to forward one of its steam cara. The ~wheels, however, were notadapted to the Bleeck- er sireet and the necessary alterations caused delay, ~ At length all the arrangements were comploted, and on Saturdsy after- noon the cor was rteady for use. Alr. Conover wished the test to be 28 thorough as oesible, and therefora caused no slteration to Ee made in the track or any of its curves. Tho car was to run on the track in its usual condi- tion, and no horses were to be taken along to aid in furning corners or n_scenflm% grades, At 10 o'dock Saturdsy evening, the President of tho Company, some of the other officials, and their friends stepped into the car at the Bloecker Street Depot. When all was ready, seventy rEons were in the car, and Mr. Conover pre- icted that it would the track at least three times before reaching Fulton Ferry, It was not supposed that steam without exter- nal aid would propel & car_around such sharp tumns 88 were. necessarily made at Howard, Reade, and Beelman, and ‘other streets, Con- trary fo expectations, the car turned every curve, and'ascended and descended every grade With- out once leaving the track, and some of the curves were turned =t quite s nfis rate of mo- tion. Atthe top of the grade in Elm street,—the steepest in the city,—tho car was stopped, re- ~versed, and backed down the hill, returning withont_the slightest difficlty, stopping at the middle of the grade and Starting again easily. At the ehn?gncme in Reade street, the car was stopped ab centre of the carve, and again started and went on without difficulty. The car was also stopped on the retum trip on the town grade in Centre street, and was held firmly in position. The car made the trip from Tenth avenue to Fulton Ferry; and, according to the President of the line, ran satisfactorily. He considered that the three great require- ments of & steam car were met, namely: It can turn sharp curves, ascend les, and be mean- aged as easily a8 &team of horses, He thought that there was not the slightest doubt that on straight roads like those of the Thizd orthe Eighth aveuue lines, the steam car would - prove all that could be degired. Alr. Conover was satisfied that it was demonstrated by the experiment that steam could be used with suc- cess on the street railway, and that it would not. frighten harses. Asto the probability of its coming into general use in the city he could not speal, 25 that would depend upon the action of the Common Council; neither could he speak with certainty of its use on his own road, as he hed consulted with none of the Directors on the subject, and possibly they might oppoee the project ; but as for himself, ho would advocate the introduction of the caron the Bleecker street line. If it could be used on that line of sharp curves and steep grades, its success on any other line in this city wonld be assured. The experi- ‘ment will be repeated at an early day. e ey A Man Journeys Seventy-Five Miles from Xlome While Aslecp. Willism Lewis, o farmer, near Indianapolis. The total estimated cost of the work is $20,000. “The dyke is made of stone purely, and 235 feet bave been_constructed to this date. Forty hands are worked on it constantly under the charge of Mr., John Logan, of Syracase, Mo., the_buildor of the Callaway Gounty Raiirond. 1t is conldently expected that the enterprise will be finished by March 1st, nest, Work can ‘bo done only in winter during low water. The amount paid per cuhi:fi-n:d i8 81.10. The project will in all probability prove & suc- cess. As the land it will protect would other- wise certainly in course of time be swept away, it is an entorprise of great importance and value to Boone and Callawsy Counties.
