Their Influcnce Upon the Airs From Appleton’s Journal. Agreat deal has been written and said upon the influence of plants on the air of rooms, and et people in general have no very clear iden in Tegard to it, the probability bninlg that tho opin- ions of any casually-selected half-dozen persons will be about equally divided on the question of the good or bad effocts of plants and flowers in rooms, cspecially bed rooms. The result is that meny persons ignorantly expose themselves to deleterions influences ; while others, to whom flowers are a great luxury, deprive themselves of the pleasure that might bo derived from_in-door cultivation of plants, being deterred from ad- mitting them to their rooms by a fear of their injurious effects. It is now generally undorstood that, in tho or- ganic world, plants and animals form tvo mutu- ally nnts.fonistic agencies. While animals de- stroy, plants reconstruct; what animals pull dowp, plants build up. Animals and fires aro constantly vitiating the atmosphere; whilo plants, on the other hand, aro as constantly pu- Tifying it. In this way the poisonous emana- tions of volcanoes, the effete breath of animals, and the deadly fumes of fires, aro not only re- moved and rendered barmless, but are actually converted into delicious fruits ond life-sustain- insfcod; 80 that these two -kingdoms, the ani- mal and the vegetable, are not merely antago- ni]s]f.ic, but form & wondrous balance to each other. The details of this process are essily followed and understood, and may be thus stated: When we burn x;fwiuce of bread, it18 quickly reduccd to charcoal ; and, if the process be continued, the whole of it, with the exception of a very small quantity of ashes, will disappear, being converted into air or gas. The same effect that is produced in the fire is produced in our bodies. The charcoal of the bread is burned and passcs off in our breath as_cerbonic acid, and thus the air is constantly undergoing & process of poison- ing, whichnecessitates ventilation in ourhousos. The plant, however, 8eizes upon this carbonic acid, and, with the aid of sunlight, decom- oses it, using the carbon, or charconl, to Pad up its own structure, while the oxygen thas was consumed by the animal in burning up its food, is set free and allowed to eecape into the atmosphere. Plants are thus tho great puri- fiers of the atmosphers; and consequently, whether in the open air or in closs rooms, they servo to render it fit for respiration. So far, therefore, a5 mero vegetable functions are con- cerned, plants are undoubtedly s benefit. It is true that they act s purifiers only in the pres- enco of sunlight, and during darknese thoy are apt to give out a small portion of the carbonic acid they had previously absorbed ; but this Tact may be eafely disregardod, as the %\mnfity of gas fl:en out insuch circumstances by one of the -gest house-plants probably does not equal the amount that would be emitted by half a dozen expirations of an ordinary adult. Moreover, therw are good grounds for believing that, in addition to the removal of mere carbonic acid, plants exercise & salutary influence upon the oxygen of the air. Thus the well-known influ- encoe of sun-flowers, and other plants with large foliage, in preventing minsma, has been attribn- ted to the fact that the oxygen given out by theee plants is highly ozonized. aud that this ozone destroys the miasmatic gorms. In support of this view, its advocates adduce the fact that. in towns_and cities, where the population is denso and vegetation scanty, thero is alwoys a remarkable absence of ozone; while in the country parts, where vegetation is abundent, ozone abounds. On the whole, then, there is no reason for supposing that the foliage of ordinary plants exercises an injurious influence on the air of rooms ; but, at the same time, wve must not sup- ose from 'this that all plants are harmiess. ost of the plants that are grown in houses are highly odorous; andit well known that the odors of many plants produce an injurious_ef- fact, which is greater than can be accounted for Dby any mere {efinma to which they give rise. Precisely what plants are injurious to the gen- erality of mankind it is at present impossiblo to say. Certain plants, such as lilies and others of that family, seem to affect some persons, while to others they are perfectly innocuons ; and in other cases, as, for example, that of kalmias and rhododendrons, while the plants themselves are harmless, the pollen of the flowers is highly marcotio, 1t has even been supposcd that what is called hay-fever—a disease to which certain sensitive persons are subject during the hay- msking season—is due to the pollen of that de- lightf E_hfmgflnt plant — the sweet, vernal grass. 0 pollen of this plant is known to con- tain coumerine, s compound which is found largely in the tonka-bean, and which readily fosms a vapor that, when inhaled, powerfully &ifects the brain. < The great difficulty which lies in the way, of giving specific directions on thia point arises from the fact that different constitutions are differently affected by the same plant. To some the odor of new-mown hay is delicionsly pleas- ant, and significant of balmy summer evenings and all the delights of country life; to others it brings only memories of diseaseand pain. Un- Iess, therefore, we know by experience that cer- tain'plants are harmless, we should be careful abont admitting them to onr rooms, especially when they are in flower. One rule is, however, tolerably safe, and that is, that those plants which are generally kept for the besuty of foli- age, and “which ary destitato of odor, such a8 ivy, and various climing vines, ate quite barm- leés. And, as we have just remarked, many plants arg ‘perfectly inoceuons except when in ower. In regard to flowering and highly-odor- iferous plants, personal experience is the only eafe guide. 1t will not do, in this case, to rely upon the experience of ofhers; and great can- tion must be observed, £o that, on the sppear- ance of the slightest evil effects, the plant un- der trial may be banished from our apartments. Indians at a Civilized Binner. The delegations of Kiowas, Comanches, Ara- ahoes, etc., now in the Enst, visited the Mary- d Institute Fair, Fridey. The Baltimore Ga- Zette £ays : # Afier they had been conducted to the apart~ ment in the Maryland Institute assigned them, all of the young women took to the tioor, some of them in a sitting, but most of them in a re- clining pos and zfient the time in combing their with small * eards, similar to those uged for carding cotton and wool. Shortly after 12 o’clock the Indinns were conducted to Shaw'a Cottage Restaurant, on North High streot, where dinner was prepared for them, As soon as dinner was announced, they did not need a second invitation, but marched in single file to the dining-room, where two long tables wers spread and abundantly supplied with roast beef, potatoes, bread and butter, and froit. Without Ceremony, 25 5oon as they reached the table they fell to work and ate ravenously for a full half hour. Most of them showed a remarkable fond- ness for butter and bread, and their mode of eating it was to first swallow a piece of butter sbout half tho size of un ordinary egg, and then take a small piece of bread. The principal article of diet, however, was beof, and ono squaw of about 16 years sto nine large glices, equal to about two and s half pounds. While the dinner was going on rearcely & word was_spoken by any of *hem ; indeed, there appeared to .be no time for talking until fhe business in hand had been gob tirough with. One large Indian, who sat near thn entrance door of the dining-room, espied a lte of pickled cucumbers, and he took the ariest on his plate. One-half of tho pickle wen: into his mouth and down his throat, but no soomr was it swallowed than he slapped both handton his stomach, and rolled his eyes up- ward 1 horror. Evidentlyhe had not been used to thatsortof relish. All finished eating at al- most tte same moment of time, and at a signal from Cmptain Alvord, who had charge of them, they returned to the recoption-room, when the wormen agaio went to the floor.” —_—— —It is awell-known fact in surgery, that when air gets in‘o the tissuea in conscquence of a perforation of & lung by & punctured rib, it does Dot excite putrefaction or suppuration, as it is 8pt to do when it acts on an external wound. In s letter to the London Times, Prof. Tyndall hag connected with this fact his interesting and valusble observation, by means of abeam of light, that_air expelled from the lungs by a forced expiration contains no flogting particles, and considers that, together, these facts afforda complete demonstration that germs in the air, ablo by filtration, are the cause of putre- ;:::gn andyitu asgociated phenomena of ani- malcular life.
