Ats Srmplq‘ls—now It Showld “Be Treated. o the Fditor lhe Chicago Tribune : Bm: The psent horse-epidemic is no new diseage. Allie symptoms we have heard of go 4o prove thaslis the same epizootic catarrh, or typhoid influca, that first made its appearance in Englond sdar back s 1619, and agsin in 1882, in 1848-2, during the first six months of 1854, at thecle of 185, at the beginning of 1857, in the uly summer of 1862, 1803, and 1864, and moror less ever since. In the United States, it first ade'its appearance in 1836, and is etill sec every epring and fall, with sympton more or less severe,—the symptoms vaing each season, according to ihe intensity othe disease. The general symp- toms at first obrved are: A watery discharge from the eyes; slight cough; a chilk or shiver- ing fit, succeed| by increased heat of the body, fever, and irritdon ; loss of appetite ; discharge of mucus frembe nose; great prostration of strength; folloed, in a day or two, by swelling of the legs, bell and breast. This swelling of the belly and bnst is non-inflammatory, soft and jutting on pissure, called Anasarca; when of thelegs, it is jlled (Edema, or Erysipele- Edematenx. Sobtimes this disease takes ob- & rheumat form, when the back and joints ar gore and stiffiened, Jooking a8 if tho nimal had lumbego, or was sgir::qed across th Joins. At other seasons, this diseass talies on, gastro-mucose form, when the liver and digesits organs appear to partici- pate in_an unusual egree. This form will be observed by o yelld, bilious-looking appear- ance of the mucusmembranes, and the feces are flard and in smil pellets, covered with & light-colored, slimy fucas. Animals havicg ! the above - symptoms should be ced in _=& comfortable, well-ventilated” stalle. Remember that Bo disease ecma Le cared withont plenty of fresh air. Itwill be observed that low under- gruu.mi, ill-verflated stables are the first to ave enimals a%cted with epizootic disease. In the fall of theyesr, stablemen are careful to have the stableclosed up to prevent cold. This 1s poor logic, fc they are only hastening on the diseases they e trying to prevent. Many an Individual will bmember that, on staying fifteen or twenty minues in an ill-ventilated stable, in- boling tho ges of ammoniz, and coming out quickly into the fresh sir, irri- tation of the eyes takes place, causing a flow of tears,nd irritation of the Schneide- rian Membranécausing violent_sneezing. If it Biffect men for s short 2 time, how much more will it affect theoor horse, that is obliged tostay in such a steble, perhapy, 12 or 18 bours out of the 247 Once moro and for all, 1 say, deny not your animais frea air. If the body is cold, cover well with binkets; if the legs are cold, spply bandages. 0 not bleed or give purgatives in this disease, s they will only ten the discase. Do nof spply strong blsters to the throat, as is often done. If te throat appears to be much affected, ap)ly s Liniment of liquid am- monia, two ounces ; olive oil, five ounces; tine- ture of aconite roof one ounce. Allow the an- imal plenty of coolivater to arink. Bisty drops of sulphuric acid‘whu_:h the animal will very readily drink, will assist grenflz{m sustaining the flagging powes of life the disease £hould show a astenic or depressed condition, the pulse become wiry, soft, and compressi- ble,—avoid _all forms of ~sedatives. _Give n-drop doses of pux-vomica in & little cold wate, and place on the animal's tongue ; s dracha dose of aromatic spirits of ammonis, mixedvith thin gruel, twice a day. If there is any diffalty in giving this to the ani- mal, on eccount ¢ his_inal i.htg to_swallow, the fallowing shouldje substituted : Powdered car- Ponste of ammots, two drachms ; pimento and Egntion root, of ach one drachm; T with izi- lo 5yTup, and r2ce upon the animal’s tonguo. i 36 abont 1 the medicine that will b re- quired. R The cause of his, 85 well a3 all epizdotic dis- eases, is involvd in not a little obscurity. Some call it nimoighrio electrical poison, caused by changes in the tmosphere, But it has not been us yet definitel;ascertained whetner it occurs in 5 gaseons, flul, or solid condition, nome of which seems toiatisfythe philosophical student, and all belongto the unsolved problems of veterinary sciens. At present we are gracious- ly pleased to calit atmospheric. Pure air isa preventive ; als sprinkling the stable with a weak solution of:arbolic acid,—say one drachm to a pint water. Chloride of lime might also be triet Sulphurgs acid gas a8 been tried by some veterinarians with good effect. '‘ake @ emall pieco of roll- zuls:mr, about half an ounce, according to the size of t13 place to be fumigated; place it in & emall creible over some hot cinders, and 2 sulphurous s4d gas will be given out. From tie Cincinnati Enquirer, Oct. 21, There is sarce a child or grown-up person ~ who ever goci to the circus but remembers with . pleasure the jarformances of Dan Rice's famous trick horse Ixcelsior. For the last eighteen * years, on eachrecurrence of'the esson, he has cen one of tle aronic attractions of that famous ghow, and wheever he appeared in the ring it - was to receive \he plaudits of the thousands who were gathered wround it. Thon%g totally blind, he exhibited w2 intelligence that was almos buman, and in fi0 tablozn pieces and posturing, . which was the greater part of his business,” 1i " was pronounced by to be the hendsomest borse they ever suw. g Dex Rice came ‘o the city lst week and pitch- &d his tents on Union Groands. Escelsior, of pourse, came with him, and, as usual, was the dmiration of every one who wext to the show. The old horse, however, did not seem in his _usnal spirits. He scemed to be too sick to teke his part, and though at times he would firs up 8nd go throngh s part handsomely s sudden tremor wonld como over him, and ho would sink down exhausted. The cheery voice of his old mester failed to meet with the quick response as of old, and the kind-hearted showman found Ehat his pet had becomo deaf as well as blind, &nd that Excelsior's course was about run. On Saturday night the old horse was_brought into the ricg for the last time. He went through a part of his performance, but, before it was half over, had to be led out, trembling and scarce able to walk. Mr. Rice, in a little Bpacch, which was full of pathos, told the crowd that Excelsior, who had travelled with him for - the past aighteengaus, and who_was almost a nhflgfiy him, could not live much longer. He bad been his constant companiod, and had “helped to mske nost of the money hehad hn; during that time. He loved him not for this so much as for the almost bhuman fraits and human intelligence that he possessed, and now that he was about to die be felt & pang in his heart as if he wes indeed human. The old horse, he said, would be taken to Mr. Connelly's etable on Bay- miller street, where eversthing that was gnzsih o table, and when he died ho would have an honorable inter- ment. Tho father of this horse, 0ld Excelsi- or,” when he died at Baltimore many years ago, wis buried with great pomp, and he (JIr. Rice: Griswold, the * Fat Contributer,” to sec that Excelsior's remains re- At the conclusion of his speech the showman's eyes_ filled with tears, and not & few of his auditors joined with him. S How a Fellow Feecls when He is Full of Strychnine, From the Gold Hill (Nev.) Nets, Dr. Harris, the well known assayer, who re- eides at the lower end of town, came near_being oisoned to death last night through taking a Soac of medicine for rheumatism. The settlings in the bottom of the vial settled his case. The following communication from him received at noon to-day tells the whole story: “ Lastnight (Thursday) I felt & pain in my knee, caused by thenmstism. I got up at 10 o'clock and took & dose of theumatic medicina prescribed by Dr. Toland, of Sen Francisco. There was only one dose left, and, not at the time thinking of the sediment at the bottom of the vial, I took it. HsIf an hour after, a3 I was laying in bed witha cendle in hand resding, I was struck senseless and s‘peechle:s‘ The candle fell on thebed and 1 conld neither stir norery out for a second. Tuckily the shock terminated in time {0 let me ut out the light or the house and all would Enva been consumed. More and stronger shocks snd convulsions then followed, and from symp- tomsI kmew thet Thad taken strychnine, = Ay wife brought sweet oil, of which I took two doses. But great God! what & torment. Shocks and convulsions followed from half past 10 to 12 o'clock, when the desth tnroes set in. I was convalsed, and felt five shocks like aman broken on 5 wheel, and the last shock made me helplesa and stiff. I felt the earth give way, and called my wife tome, My hends wero crossed, but I could not move them, nor any part of mg body. I bade them all_good-by, and swooned. My ifagent the children for & doctor, snd Dr. Kir- by came abont 12, snd found me still alive 2nd somewhat rational, as the oil had its effect. From then until 6 o'clock this morning X had shocks like from & galvanic battery every few minutes. I could not stir hand or foot, and any attempt to turn my head brought a shock. To tell what I suffered is impossible, and I had given up all thought of life; but soon I began to Tecover; and now—I10 o'clock a. m,—I am able to write you this, in order that you may warn persons using this medicine to beware of over- doses or settlings.” Sharp Practice by Boys. The Hudsog (N. Y.) Register say: __““Our citizens who attend the various exhibi- tions from time to time at the City Hall, fre- &l’lanfly ask themselves how all the boys get in e shows, and areat a loss for an answer. After careful observation, we have got so far into the secret as to be able to tell how some of them do it. “The capital needed to start the business in the firat place is 10 cents. Vith this the young sharper purchases half s bar of soap, puts it in & prper, and waits ontside for o rush. With the rush he finds himself at the door, when the door-tender stops him, and aske for hie ticket. The young sharpersays: *I just wont out for this sozp for a man on the stage, and he'sin & hurry.’ Not suspecting anything wrong, the door-tender permita him to passin. When in- side, the lad takes a seat and pockefs the sosp for the next show which comes along. If the door-tender is changed through the evening, the sonp is dropped out of the windoyw to an accom- lice, and sharper No.2 slips in on the ‘soap lodge.” 4 “gAxmflJer trick which their ingenuity bas in- vented, is to direct o telegraph envelope to one of the performers on the Stage, put it in a pass- book and meke inquiries af the door for the ac- tor to whom they hove directed it. They are told by tho doorlreeper to go behind the cur- tan _and deliver it.’ They step inside, close the door atter them, put the pretended do- atch and books in their pocket and sce the ow out. “‘ These dodges have been played at the City Hall in this city by the lads for months, and only by accident was the practice discovered, by which the sharpest showman travelling have been swindled.” e A Queer Railroad Accident. From the Lancaster (Pa.) Intelligencer, This morning the Pacific Express, west, which passes through this city at2:35, met with o 8in, accident at the junction—Landisville. The Reading Road crosses the Pennsylvania Road at this point, and s train of empty coal cars was standing across the latter track. About this time tho Pacific Express came dashing along, and, before the engineer had time to check the speed of the locomotive, it had dashed throngh & coal car and was tearing B]ong at its regular speed towards Harrisburg, wit! only the loss of a cow-catcher. The engineer, secing that no harm had been done to any one, did not stop after he had safe- Iy “‘gono through” the debris. Thiscan be class- ed a5 & most miraculons escape from whatmight have been a terrible disaster, but the speed at which the train was going was very swift. The wrecked car was struck amid wheels and broken completely into atoms, the splinters flying in_all directions, but luckily hitting no ome. The shock was distinctly felt by the railroad emplog— ers who were sitting on the front and back ends of the coal train, but they either did not know the time at which the train waa due, or else the watchman at the station displayed great ignor- ance in not having his flag-lamps hung out. Street-Cleaning in Paris The cleansing of the streets of Paris isan affair of greater importence than many people would imagine. It costs' the municipelity more than four millions of francs per annum. Some details respecting the sweeping of the streets may not be uninteresting. There are 11,000,000 square metres to be swept every day, of which 9,220,000 are at the cost of the municipality, 5,520,000 at the cost of such owners of property 24 do not subgcribe, apd 3,560,000 nndertaken by the municipality for the subscribers. The aver-~ age cost is 2934 centimes per annum. The per- sonnel comprises sweepers regularly engaged and auxiliaries. They ere in two divigions : Ist, 41 brigades, composed of a chief and 30 sweep- ers (male or female); second, 70, consisting of & chief and 12 sweepers, occupled onlg balf aday. There are 931 sweepers employe conat&nfl{ and 2,630 auziliaries on an average, of whom 910 re men aud 1,720 are women. e day's work commences &t 3 in the morning in summer, and 4 in winter; the balf day terminates at 10 in tha morning, and the dsyat 4 in the afternoon. The auxilieries only work half-a-dsy, and re- ceive 1f. (20e.) Alawis about to be submitted to the Assembly for compelling all proprietors to subscribe to the cleansing of the streets. A Royal Lovers The Archduke Henry, of Austria, who some years ago committed the terrible crime of mar- mng an actress, and was in consequence ban- ished the dominions of Franz Jose{ has been 80 far pardoned as to be allowed to return to Austria, with his wife, upon condition of re- siding in the Tyrol. Leopoldine Hoffman, his wife, i8 a fine woman, and the merriage was o love-match. The sentimental King of Bavaria took e great interest in the unfortunate couple, and raised the Archduchess to the Peerage of Bavaris, in the hopes of making her more ac- ceptable to the aristocratic heir of the Crmsars, but in vain. It is believed that the Emperor was inflnenced in his severity towards the Arch- duke by his mother, the 1late Arch- duchess Sophia, who was extremely incensed at the conduct of her nophew. The Archduchess was indeed & woman with no heart, cold, cruel, and proud, and she is said to have instigated her 8on to order the terrible execution of the Hun- arion Generals at Arad, which horrified all urope, simply to gratify private revenge. & CITY REAL ESTATE, OR SALE_100 FEET CORNER COTTAGE GROVE and Forty-Bith-at. 0 doot” coraer Bouth Perk Boulovard and Forts- st 160 Toct, east front, South Park Boulevard, near Forty- first-st. 603 feat corner Calumet~av. and Forty-third-st. 909 feet corner Calumet-av. and Forty-first-st.
