JACOBS Central Press Correspondent LONDON, Jan. 5.—A woman diplomat is being thrust into the limelight by the ominous situation in Iraq which is reviving all the old hatred between Britain and Turkey. In the afternoon they were married in the municipal building. Their engagement had been rumor- ed a dozen times and as many times denied. Mr. MacKay disapproved of the match, Yesterday he issued this statement: “The marriage comes as a com- plete surprise to me and was done without my knowledge and ap- proval.”” Berlin's early life was spent sell- ing newspapers on the Bowery. His bride is of Fifth Avenue society. Mr. Berlin is a Jew, his father was a Rabbi. His bride is a Roman Cath- olic. Her father is one of the most prominent Catholic laymen. Berlin was asked about the relig- fous question. “We will simply con- tinue in our own religions,” he an- swered. The wedding party went to the municipal building by subway, one of the few subway trips the bride had ever taken, and a deputy city clerk performed the ceremony. J., Jan. 5 —#)—Mr. and Mrs. Irving Berlin registered at the Ritz Carlton here shortly before midnight last night, having motored from New York, FLASHES OF LIFE phoned for Dr. A. Thomas Brandat, who found Evelyn unconscious. Russell accompanied his mother to the Ashland Boulevard. hospital, where he remained with her until 7 a, m. Although it was” reported that Evelyn had taken about elght ounces of a powerful disinfectant and was in a very critical condition, when she reached the hospital, two hours later, her physician said she had at least some chance to recover. Miss Nesbit, who once before had swallowed poison in New York, had been dancing at the Moulin Rouge cafe under a six weeks’ contract when her New Year's celebration be- gan. Since then she had spent much of her time with friends at cafes, theaters, and in her own apartment, and had contemplated leaving at once for Florida. After five hours at the “hospital her physician pronounced Evelyn in a “slightly improved” condition. Both her pulse and respiration were somewhat improved, he sald, al- though she remained unconscious. While the physician was guarded in his statements, some watchers thoyght the iniprovement indicated & good chatice for recovery. In the meantime her son had re. turned to the apartment. He had had train reservations to go to Phil- adelphia. The maid was taken in charge by the police and questioned. The occupant of the apartment beneath that of Evelyn told the -po- lice there had been a party in her quarters from 11 o’clopk Monday night until early this morning, say- Ing the voices of two men could be heard. Another neighbor sald she heard a scream early this morning. This neighbor said Russell Thaw had arrived during the Christmas holidays to visit his mother, Numerous telegrams were scatter- ed about, most relating to Florida engagemtnts at Miami and Miami Beach. None had been found of a character that might throw any light on the motive for the suicide at- tempt. EVELYN IN PUBLIC EYE FOR 20 YEARS. For 20 years, Evelyn has been al- mort as much in the public eye as her former husband. Harry Thaw. Her marriage to Thaw in Pittsburgh in April, 1905, followed a three year courtship during which the gay ac- tions of the couple frequently got them into print. She was then about 20, 7 But it was 14 months later that she became the center of worldwide notoriety, when Thaw shot White on the old Madison Square roof gar- den in June, 1906. Her confessions to her husband of relations with White prior to their marriage were repeated on the witness stand when Thaw was tried for murder, During the long period of Thaw's incarcerations, trials and other legal difficulties, Evelyn lived quietly, the Thaw family supplying her with funds on condition that she Keep out of the news columns. Thaw eventually divorced her and Evelyn went to Europe to continue her art studies. She returned in 1922, with a baby whom she called Russell K. Thaw but after long litigation, she failed to secure support for him from the Thaw fortune. She lavished on the child all possible tenderness and care and fought to the limit to establish him as the Thaw hetr. She then returned to the stage and rose to fame as a dancer, her part- ner being Jack Clifford. Returning from an European success, she filed petition in bankruptcy and her theatrical popularity slumred. A re- turn to Europe was likewise unsuc- cessful. She married Clifford but they were soon separated.
