Generally moderate temperatures with only an occasional light snow storm during the month benefited Wyoming ranges and sheep and cat- tle continued in excellent condition, according to the ‘December range and livestock report issued by the Wyoming crops and livestock report- ing service. Cattle and sheep feed- ing for market, while not as great as at first expected, is considerably larger than at this time last year. Range—The condition of the range has improved two points since a month ago and Is reported at. 90 per cent of normal now. A year ago dur- ing this périod an improvement from 87 to 91 per cent was estimated The winter range was generally open and not Much feeding was necessary. However, earlier in the month inter- mittent snows covered ranges for a short period and ws beneficial irr supplying needed moisture. Warmer temperatures and sunshine has done much to clear the range and make feed available for livestock. Besides ample range feed in nearly every section there is an abundance of hay and grain feeds and lHyestock are ex- pected to go through the winter in good condition. Cattle—The condition of cattle re mains the same as was reported thir- ty days ago, 99 per cent of normal. Twelve months ago it was reported at 98 per cent of,normal or the same as the month frevious.~ The open range, sunshiny weather, and rela- tively warm temperatures were fa- vorable for cattle and they continued in very good condition, Feeding other than for market was necessary in only a few localities where snow on the range had crusted over and was sow in going off. Some liquidating is still going on and many herds have been culled closely this fall. Recently shipments have been heavy from Sheridan and the Star Valley. There is, however, some tendency to re- stock with cattle and the financial situation seems a lot better than it was a year ago. Banks are extend- ing a few loans and the demand for stocker cattle has strengthened some- what: Shéep—The condition of sheep is 99 per cent of normal as compared with 101 per cent last month and 98 per cent a year ago. The shrinkage in sheep is due to snows crusting over and temporarily covering the ranges in some sections during the latter part of the month, Due to warmer temperatures recently these conditions have been rectified and sheep should regain their losses, It is reported that there is ample snow for sheep on the desert ranges and that very little feeding has been nec- essary to date, There is ample hay on hand and most sections have rhip- ped in a supply of concentrates for feeding in case of a severe storm. There have been many farm flocks started this year which strengthen- ed the demand for old ewes, The tendency to restock {s very strong and large numbers of ewe lambs were held back+for that purpose.
