STUART’S DYSPEPSIA TABLETS Four Times Has Slayer Escaped Firing Squad (By Central Press) SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 17.—Four times have executive clem- ency and legal technicalities snatched Ralph W. Seyboldt, confessed slayer of Patrolman David Crowther, from the firing squad. Four times he has been sentenced to death and is still ‘Iighting to escape the penalty. Seyboldt, in company with two other youths, was arrested tn Lud- ow, Cal, following the finding of Crowther's body in the “jungte,” a few miles west of Sglt Lake City, mm October 14, 1923. A bullet had pierced the officer's head. The poc- ket in which it was thought he carried his money was turned in- out, The youths were riding in wther's car when arrested. Execution Daté Set, | Seyboldt was convicted of first degree murder on April 1, 1924, and was sentenced to be ‘shot to death June 4, 1924. Granting of motion for 4 new trial automatically stayed the execution. The supreme court affirmed the judgment of the lower court in April, 1925, and the execution was set for May 29, Governor George H. Dern granted an eleventh hour reprieve. Having failed to produce new evi- dence, -the convict was taken into the district court again on August 28 and he was re.sentenced to diée before the firing squad on Septem- ber 11 Judgé M. L. Ritchie departed from the precedent of setting date for ex- ecution on re-sentencing from. 30 to 60 days ahead, but the supreme court, on appeal from counsel for Seyboldt, overruled the judge, hold- ing that the execution must be set within these limits. This action again siayed the hand of the law in Impos- ing the death penalty. Seyboldt for the fourth time heard the death sentence pronounced and the date set for October 23. Reprieve Granted. After an all-day session the day hefore the execution was to have aken place the board of pardons dl- rected H. E. Crocket, acting gover- nor during the absence of Governor Dern, to again grant a reprieve. Seyboldt has bared his plea for n on statement that Crowther had been drinking and that he made threats against. the convict.
