SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14 1925 How Novels Are Written as Told By Author of Tribune’s New Serial Story) BY EDGAR POE’ NORRIS {Famous author who wrote, “Sur- render” and “Methuselah’s Wife.” ‘The latter will be published ser: iaily in The Tribune daily, beginning Monday, November 16.) Homer Croy once did a very amus- ing little essay on the trials of the young author trying to find a com- fortable way to write, He found what every other other so-called man of letters finds—that there is no “comfortable” way to write. Au- thoring is devilish hard work. Many who earn their ying by the pen are able to do so under all sorts of condition. Any place they can push a pen over a pad ts an ideal workroom. But I must be alone, indoors, There must be no books or magazines around me, and no music or possible means of enter- tainment, for I am a,man @f weak will, and most any diversion can take me away from my desk. And I must have quiet. | Quiet is of all things most neecs-| sary to a writer, not because he fs particularly nervous or irritable, but because the slightest noise takes him out of the self-propelled dream into which he must plunge in order to write. Before I can attempt a line, I must be rid of my tie, or anything tight about my body, and I must have on a pair of eas> slippers. And there | must be on my writing table a gen- | erous sheath cf unruled paper, four | or five pencils finely sharpened, an | eraser, a dictionary, mye and ink, my notebook. The “first drafts” of my stories I el ee eae sees MF tes rae cee Oe Wear Key do in pen and ink. With these notes at my side, I type them out, filling in details, amending, abbreviating. Then I read ove the typed sheeta, make sure that what I want to say is there, and that's all there {s to it. It remains for my secretary to re- type the work neatly. My own typ- ing is done hit and miss fashion with two fingers. There aro many advantages to the life of an author, obviously, One of the disadvantages 1s being asked constantly, “Where do you get your material?" Only @ vague answer is possible, An author gets his ideas everywhere. He gets his material out of his ex- periences and ‘fis {nner-consclous- ness. cme a q ic bores, sealed with Blue A cea ice PHONE 28-F-3 Big Feature Dance TONIGHT This is the one big night of the week when every- On Saturday nights you are bound to Now is the time Thrilling!
