FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1925 CONDITIONS ON RANGE IMPRQUE NN LAST MONTH Breaking of Drou ght General in Western Range Section Western range and feed conditions continued to improve during Septein- ber and the prospects are very good for an ample supply of hay and feed for the winter season, according to the report just issued by the western regional office of the United States department of agriculture. Ok‘a- homa, Texas and New Mexico show the greatest improvement In range conditions, while the western por- tions of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas show slight gains, | Due to an abundance of rainfall the past two months, which broke a prolonged drought in the three * southwestern states, ranges, tures and fall planted feed crops have made large amounts of much needed feed. Ranges’ in western Kansas and Nebraska have improved somewhat and prospects are good for an abundance of wheat pasture. Grass cured up well in Montana, Wyoming and western Dakotas which, supplemented by bountiful hay and grain crops, will carry stock through the winter in fine shape. Colorado ranges are very good but some parts in danger of early frost In all states west of the Continental Divide conditions range’ from good to excellent. For the 17 western states, the condition of the range is estimated at 92 per cent off normal, compared with 89 per cent last month, 74 per cent one year ago and 94 per cent in 1923. Due to excellent range conditions the past summer in all except the drought stricken southwest, cattle have attained and held a high con- dition of flesh. In Texas and New Mexico, however, they have made a remarkable improyement during the past month and with good feed » prospects In sight very few winter losses are expected. The fail move- “ment to market started a little earl- ier than usual, yet the volume is not expected to be any larger than last year but strung out over a longer period. The country demand has been strengthened considerably by local trading. Where possible to get financial backing, some are restock- ing, making the outlook much brighter than for the past seyeral years. The condition of cattle is re- ported at 91 per cent of normal com- pared with 89 per cent last month, 88 per cent in 1924 and 93 per cent in 1923, ‘Sheep are moving form the sum- mer ranges in excellent ,condition. Lambs are somewhat héavier and many that were intended for the feed lots are being marketed as gri fat, the feeder end is just beginnfng to Teach the feed pens. Marked im- provement in condition of sheep ani lambs in Texas and New Mexico is reported. In the other western states their condition continued very good to excellent. Farmers are taking large numbers of old ewes and send- ing the price upward. Many sections report that sheep are taking the place of cattle fo rrestocking pur- poses. Feeding operations are get- ting under way around the beet sugar factori The condition of sheep is 98 per cent of normal, the same as Jast month and compares with’88 per cent a year ago and 97 per cent two years ago. ‘Children’s Pictorial Cross Word Puzzle Running Across, Word 1, What the Three Bears, ved in. ! » Word 4.
