ROLE INFORMATION FOR MOTORISTS WASHINGTON, D, C., Oct. 10- Motor tourists are given some help- ful driving hints and much food for thought in a special warning just issued by the American Automobile association against the peculiar hazards of autumn motoring. “Leaf skidding,” stalling, head light glare and battery failure are among the features covered in the warning. The fall of the year, usually a period of motoring delights, is also a period of special hazards, accord ing to the national organization of car owners. “‘Leaf skidding,” the A. A. A. explains, “is likely to be a more serious hazard this year than ever before. Many side-roads have been repaved recently and since these roads are invariably lined with trees autumn rating are likely to combine with fallen leaves to make a very unstable path for the careless drive Leaves always have been a source of danger in the fall, par- ticularly when they hold water on thelr under side and thus trap the driver who thinks he can get perfect traction when he wants to stop quickly. This year the situation is aggravated by reason of the higher speeds drivers wi'l travel over the improved roads.” Weak tires are also pointed out as a grave danger. Autumn time ts blowout time, it is said. : “Careful inspection of tires should be the rule before setting out for a fall trip,” the A. A. A. advises, “Many motorists go all summer without appreciating that the tires ure rapidly weakening. When they start on the fall tour it is not an uncommon thing to find these over- worked tires blowing out. “An excellent plan is to purchase a new set of tires in the fall, using them for the trip and then removing them for the winter, Old tires will he found safe enough on the car cold weather when speed is not the rule, provided, o efficient traction due to the smooth s. In winter car owners make it a point to have the car- buretor adjusted properly for ‘the weather conditions the motor will encounter, and it is the rule to have some sort of covering over the core of the radiator.
