TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1925 HYLAN SEIZES AADIOSTATION STO GET WOTES New York’s Mayor Has Edge in Broadcast- ing Campaign. By ROBERT T. SMALL (Copyright, 1925, by Casper Tribune) NEW YORK, Sept. 1.—The radio, which was accused of taking the col- or out of the last presidential cam- palgn, is threatening to put a.large dash of red into New York's mayor- alty squabble. New York City has a big, high- Powered station of its own. It cost something more than $50,000 -to bulld and costs almost an equal an- nual <um to maintain for, ostensibly there aré no ndvertising fees to be collected by the municipality. However, certain circles of the i have looked upon the station ath something very much akin to askance ever since it was projected They thought, among other things, that it put too much power into the hands of the city administration and might give an incumbent at the city hall an unfair advantage over any possible opponents in reaching a large section of the people. Now it has come to pass. Mayor Hylan, desperate in his losing stvug- gle for a third term, has “seized” the station and ‘has broadcast front its tall towers a terrific blast against Gov. Al Smith, who tg regarded here as spelling nemesis for his honor, The mayor has: used the. ‘station freely to tell the people of the greater city all that his administra- tion has done for them. The mayor says he has been “selling the city” to its people. He has been “selling” them the police, selling the fire de- Partment, the “white wings,” the sewer squad, the schools and ait the rest of the ramifications of modern government. The station was an eriment in Gunman Guarded After Outbreak Extra precautions are being taken in Oregon penitentiary to prevent the escape of Tom Mur- ray, notorious gunman, recap- tured after a jail break in which he and companions killed three and seriously wounded one. He is seen after béing trapped by a posse. OUT OUR WAY WHOOH! SOMEBODY “THROWED A CIGARETTE BUTT \wTO A RUBBER Boor: ER DROPPED A MATCH ON A Pooo.e Doc. I AY TORKISH OOH!
