C., August 11.— The following story, printed recently in the Washington Post, from the pen of the irrepresible Will Rogers, may be somewhat irrelevant for this column but it is causing so many local Wyomingites to chuckle that I yenture to pass it on. Here is the story: Charley Irwin, the man that every- body in the west knows, is respon- sible for the big Frontier Days cele- bration in Cheyenne and he races the biggest string of race horses in the west. Charley is one of the old timers in Wyoming. In the early days when they first had game laws, he was out hunting one day when he met a man and started in to tell him what good luck he had had, that he had just killed a big buck weighing over two hundred pounds. “Well,” said the other man, “do you know who you are talking to?’ No,” said Charley, “Well; I am the chief game war- den of Colorado." “And do you know who you are talking to?” said Charley. “No,” sald the warden. “Well, you are talking to the big- gest Nar in Wyoming.” Mr, and Mrs. F. YW. Mondell are enjoying a month's vacation in th west. After visiting relatives in Chi- cago, they will go to their old home in Newcastle for a short stay and will later join their daughter, Doro. they at Sheridan, and their son, Frank, Jr., who is a gulde in Yel- lowstone national park, A visitor {n the capital a short ago was young Conrad Mills Cornelia Mills, of s Mills was an hon ‘ational Cathedr uated with Philadelphia an@ was gra: e rsity of Penn. sylvania Mrs. C. BE. Winter, wife of Con- jan Winter, was hostess re at a very delightful dinner dance given in honor of her two ‘sons, Messrs. Stanley and Warren Winter. The affair which took place at the beautiful Congressional Coun try club, was enjoyed by some four- teen young friends of the boys, most ly from the college set of George Washington university, where they are students. Mrs. Leona M. Wells assisted Mrs. Winter in chaperorg ing the young people. Wyoming is getting lterary adver. tising aplenty nowadays, what with Mary Roberts Rhinehart, Caroline Lockitart, and other lesser lights. Comes now a new effusion from th pen of Struthers Burt calléd, “The Diary of a Dude Wrangler,” The ste is written around the well known Eaton ranch, with Howard Eaton as one of the foremost char- acters. The book, which {s being widely discussed here, is, an its name implies, a dally record of the affairs of the dude ranch. It is very read- able and less distorted than most western stories. A peculiarity which surprises its readers is found in the fact that the author scoffs at the common idea of a “vanished ter,” and an “extinct cowboy claring this to be @ fiction made up by the man who doesn’t know a thing about it, The many Casper friends-of Mis Margaret Quinlan, who canie to the capital a year and a half ago, will be Interested to know that she de on- SUNDAY, AUGUST 16, 1925 eee joying her work and making good | of Indianapolis, Mrs. R.
