Weather still is a dominating fac- tor but indications now are the farmers will profit tremendously from their 1926 crops. The limited wheat yleld is not questioned. But the quality of the wheat ig such that {t 1s commanding 1s premiums because of its pro- tein content. This viewpoint undoubtedly is exceptionally opti mistic, but it {s based on observa- tions of nearly 4,000 field reporters. The supporters of this theory say that there will be a drop of nearly )0 million bushels in production and that the carryover from the 1924 crop {s 150 million bushels less than for last year. They declare that outside of the amount of raw wheat which this country will export, trade-marked flour for which there {ts an establish- ed foreign demand will account for at least 100 million bushels of wheat. Canada seemingly will have a huge crop despite recently reduced esti- mates in the prairie provinces. To compete with the American gratin, the Canadian product must pay a duty in this country of approximate- ly 43 cents a bushel, The Canadian yield will: probably be around 365 million bushels. The Hungarian crop is estimated at 290 million bushels, a gain over 1924 of eight million bushels. Moreoyer, the spring pig crop this year was at least 11 per cent under that of last year. Farm- ers have had the best luck in years, however, with young pigs this sea- son. ‘The present supply of hogs on the farms is the lowest in six years. The number of sows farrowing last spring decreased at least 20 per cent in the eleven great feeding states, according to the figures of the de- partment of agriculture. The num- ber to be bred for fall has dropped two per cent below those of 1924. In addition, prices for well-conditioned beef cattle have reached new high figures in the last week. Casper and all Wyoming will find a new prosperity this year in the rec- ord-breaking crops reported by all agricultural districts of the state. Irrigated wheat yields of the Ba- sin country will run from 45 to 60 bushels an acre, barely will yield 80 bushels and up, and ether crops will return prosperity in the same propor- tion. Canals and ditches of that section are still running full of water after having had a plentiful supply for all purposes during the crop growing months. Promise of a greater presperity of the future is also contained in col- onization plans of the Big Horn Ba- sin Federated clubs, an organization embracing a large territory.’ Co-oper- ation 1s being given the Burlington railroad and other agencies, the ob- ject being to secure the settlement of rich agricultural lands now lying idle. It is estimated that there are 25, 000 acres of fine untenanted lands tn the Basin territory, and farmers are wanted for a total of some 50,000 acres. The undertaking is one of the biggest of its kind under way in the entire western region and when crowned with success will not only bring lasting benefits to immediate trade centers in the Basin territory but to such distribution centers like Casper as well.
