When everybody began to wear silk, the individualists in dress sought some other foot covering. As a result, the liste stockings, which in past years no Jashionable woman would wear, have become fashionable. They will not, of course, replace silk for the more formal occasions. The wide, fishnet patterns which leave more epidermis exposed, are being favored in theatrical circles here and abroad, It must be ad- mitted that some exceedingly har- monious results are achieved by the wearing of this mesh hosiery in tobacco brown over ankles and cg)ves tanned a golden glow by the jummer sun of the ide sands. Part of the penance inflicted on every fashion designer is that In the midst of the hottest weather the garments for fall and winter must be evolved. Just now hosiery de- signers are busily engaged in stock- ings for winter sports, One design ig shaggy rough woo] weave simu- lates spiral puttees, although they are stockings und fit more smoothly than any wrapping. Another is made to imitate long gaiters with ornamentai triangular flaps up each side which button clos» to the calf. One of the coats meant for skiing hag a novel collar which fits close about the neck and comes high in the back. Over this is pulled a leather, fur-lined helmet similar to those worn by aviators. This puts a complete quietus on the sport of putting jow down one’s neck. The latest fur originated for fall in the Parisian work rooms Is called galliak. It is intended for short jackets and is a white kid-skin, the hair of which is shaved smooth and close. Some furrlers embellish coats of this kind with pastel-colored em- brolderies done over the short fur. The Jewel Roll, There were times when the roll of the old time gamblers repre- sented largely by the jewels they wore but the modern women chance- takers carry their jewels in a spe- clally prepared pig-skin roll fitted with suede pockets to hold their sems.. It is so handy for the care- less rich, who thus are enabled to forget their precious belongings al) gene place. The police are grateful x the style. NEW YORK, July 25.—Costumes for shipboard today depend almost entirely on the size of the boat to be boarded. Atlantic liners are mere floating hotels, and costumes suit- able for any hotel are appropriate for those departing for Europe.
