During a certain period of his life Jacob and his household had yielded to the prevailing custom of the land and had set- up household gods, Then he was told: “Arise and go to Bethel and dwell the in altar unto God th ypeared unto th If you 4c and it and make there when thou fled- dest from the face of Esau, thy brother.” “Then Jacob said to his household and all that were with him, ‘Put away. the trang Is that are among you and be clean and change your garments, And Jet us arise, and go out to Bethel: and I will make there an altar unto God! ’ And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem, Jacob evidently knew that his idolatry was w rong, and yet he could not bring himself to. part absolutely with his idols, He buried then and then he built his altar, But if Jacob were guilty of a senseless contumacy, he has not lacked associates, Many have done, and still do, the same thing, Instead of “putting away the eyil from before them,” they are inclined rather to put away the appearance of evil. In this they are aided and abetted by the conventions of civilization, With the spread of education has come a high standard of culture which shrinks at vulgarity. Whatever els y be, our modern peop stundards of culture exact of him that be must not be vulgar, Thus it turns out that while sin remains it is committed in a more refined manner, Society today will not tolerate highway robbery as an occupation and rightly so, but it does tolerate, and occasionally honors those whose actions in business af- fairs differ very little in principle from highway robbery. It is true that the latter may not commit a crime under the law, but it does not follow from this that their business actions are uot sinful. There ts a difference betwen a crime and a sin, A crime is a legal misdemeanor, but a sin isan injury one does to one’s self or to one’s neighbor. Hence. if a man keeps within the four walls of the Jaw and wins a worldly success he is hon- ored by society even though he be as ruthless in business as a buccaneer, and be guilty of « smart commercialism which at times savors of tricker. ! manipulation. While a slow improyement can be noted in the morality of methods in large business enterprises, there is enormous room for the introduction of common honesty in many lines of com- mercial dealing. One of the most common forms of thievery iu business is to enter into a contract, written or implied, or a verbal enuit to supply certain conveniences or comforts to a client or tenant, at a certain price, and then lina petty way to fulfill the contract, often causing the client great inconvenience, loss, suffering or extra expense. Many who have accumulated wealth by such methods of smart commercialism are honored by society while at the same time the unsuccessful saint may be ignored or despised. \nd so the tendency of modern culture is to teach men eith- er to hide their sins, or at least to present them in a more re- fined form. It will not tolerate adultery, or recognize the adult- ress, and rightly so, but in many places it does tolerate unre- strained divorce or progressive polygamy. et there be no mistake about this matter. That form of reformation which merely hides sin or robs sin of its grossness is not in any sense a reformation, is sin whether it be in # rough or cultivate form, and the ‘sense of yulgarity can never take the place of a sense of sin, The Matter With Our Schools Hubert Work heaved a pipe wrench into the,edu- itional machinery in a college commencement address in Col- rer ¢ Let us h that it did considerable dam- ge to the 1 part Secretar ry frank terms. some of the . hooling and the >esults of its works, Because the y li ize spirit of the age college graduates are becoming criminals to an alarming extent mentality Superficial school- devotion to other interests outside men- nioral stami and the willingness of to Jet students by” when they did not their were some of the rea- ons thoughtful men ¢ 0 is conses for existing conditions, Kdueation wa ed upon as an insurance against the vicissitudes of life university presidents are franti- to discover the reason for the veral educational institutions. ing, meager tal training, lack of colle; deserve to authoritic “get b record, call onsulting one fi lure of the pt Admittance to col | universities is not sufficiently ex- neting lleges are i considerable degree simply a refuge ndolent earch of a “good time.” A tem- porary for the de Until such time as those in charge restore educational institutions to the former glory of advanced schools of th riste of mind and morals, the present conditic ould t to produce the inferior product we are now tt g n the world each succeeding - June Intellect and indust be prerequisites for ad mission.
