By JOHN B. FOSTER. (Copyright, 1925, Casper Tribune.) NEW YORK, June 13.—Lanky Bob Meusel of the Yanks, has gone “daffy with the bat. Since June 1 he has been hammering the ball at a rate that may land him the batting championship in his league. The Meuse! spurt is one of the sensations of the season and in time it is bound to have its effect in elevating New York. In fact, it hag that q@ffect right now. Since June 1 Meuse] has fumped his batting aver- age from .275 to better than .300. Last year he batted .325 for the sea- gon and when he started off this season around .275, with Ruth out of the lineup, it is easy to account for a good part of the Yankees’ , slump. In the last ten days Meusel has been batting 0% $80, Imagine a man going from .275 to .880 and you get some idea of what this big Call- fornian has done for his team. Were he to gain in lke ratio for the next fortnight, he might challenge Heil- mann, young Wingo, Speaker, Sim- mons, bb and Sisler, all of whom are fluttering in the batting Ime light. Meuse] has about twenty men to overtake before he will ait near the throne seat but if he hits all through June at his present speed, he will have passed a lot of them. Better keep an eye on the Yanks if this big fielder has finally got under way and if the veteran pitch- ers show ability to get through nine innings without being hammered out of the box. Tho New York club ts the 1925 Season; now miore than sixty points bétter off than it was June 1 and at its speed will be top of the second divi. sion soon, fighting to get over the top and into the real battle among the leaders. Philadelphia and Washington are not exactly going backwards in the sense that they are showing an ap- parent weakness, but they are fall- ing closer to the normal work of championship calibre. It was out of the question for Philadelphia to keep above .700 with such a fight on thelr hands and when Washington, with its .597 percentage mark for the pennant Iast year was under the +600 mark, it would be rather pro sumptuous to figure that this year they would be over the .600 mark very greatly, considering the general strength of their league. The early skirmishing hag shown conclusively that both Philadelphia and Washington are real pennant contenders, barring injury, but it has not shown conclusively that New York, Detroit and Chicago are out of it. The White Sox are not playing championship ball, but they are making every team give them a battle to lick them and the race has MAN INSTEAD Club Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE. Team— WwW.
