treme northwest portion. VOL. iX NO.172 elease of Suspect Held Probable If Alibi Stands. With perfectly composed countenance and never as much show of emotion as the twitching of an eyelash, Preston Reeves, 23 years of age, the alleged murderer, stood for half an hour near the body of Andrew Harrison today in the Shaffer-Gay chapel. Sheriff Alexander McPherson and other officers had brought him there as a test, it being supposed that if he actually committed the crime to which he confessed in North Platte, Neb., he would dis- play some telltale sign when con- fronted by the remains of his sup- posed victim. Officials have admit- ted that Reeves baffles them and they say he is elther telling the truth in the matter of complete re- pudiation of his confession or else he {s one of the “smoothest” crim- inals in local annals. Sheriff McPherson declared that Reeves will be given his liberty and the murder charge dropped provid- ed his alifb! is yerlfieds “We will now check up on the aiibi by telegrams to the different cities In Colorado and the south- west, which Reeves says he visited while on his trip and {f the of- ficials of those places substantiate his statements there {s no other course but to turn him loose,” the sheriff afd. “Reeves was cool as a cucumber when he was shown the body,” one of the officials who was present said. ‘There was not the slightest indication of nervousness visible on his face or body. During the time he was closely observed by all the officers and they agreed that noth- ing resulted trom the test which would further implicate Reeves in the erin “I never saw the man before,” Reeves said as he iooked at the body and observed the 19 deem skull and face wounds that had caused Harrison's death. “No, I never kill- ed a man that looked like that, I never killed a man in my Ife, " The sheriff showed him the plece of coupling hose with which Harri- son was killed and all the actions by which the tragedy is supposed to have been committed were en:ct- ed In the room near the body, All the while Reeves looked on. Now and then, as the horrible story was re-enacted, a look of interest such as would be natural in a boy read- ing a dime novel, was seen to cross his face. The s all details sion and ff grilled him again of his alibi, his confer: story of his life, but Reeves hung doggedly to his repudia tion. One detall regarding the con- fession was changed by him today, however.
