Gen- erally speaking, it is neglecting to give the battery proper care that is the cause of most of the trouble you have and the principal | reasons why the battery sametimes does not last long. _The attention a battery should have depends largely on the con- dition under which the car is driven. For instance, if your car is regularly used for a large number of yery short runs and you use the starter every time to start, it stands to reason you impose a‘ much heavier drain on the battery than would be the case if you were using it for long runs and only required to use the starter and lights at long intervals. As you probably know your battery is kept charged by the generator but you may not know that the rate the generator charges the battery or the amount of current put into the battery by the generator can be adjusted to suit the conditions under which your car is driven. When the starter or lights are tised frequently such as in the case of a doctor's car, the current is drawn from the battery very fre- quently and the generator must be set to give the maximum charge at all times. ‘Suppose, however, you use the car only for fairly long runs, you must have the generator set to deliver a compar- | atively smali charge, otherwise the battery will be overcharged. If the charging rate is set too high the battery will overheat, and | continual overcharging and overheating will ruin it in a short time. | You can easily detect if the bat-. | } tery is being overcharged by feel- ing the terminals just after you come in from a long run. If they feel more than blow warm, burn your lights for a time to partly discharge the battery and burn them while you are on the road, then have a service station mechan- ic adjust the charging rate on the generator so that it gives a smailer charge It is necessary to examine the level of the electrolyte in each cell every two weeks in summer and about once a month in winter. Keep all cells filled with distilled water 3-8 in. above the plates, but not higher than this, otherwise it will slop ont, Always use DIS- TILLED water or water caught im an earthenware vessel. Water caught on a metal roof that has come into contact with metal must NOT be used. Before filling the cells with distilled water, test each of them with a hydrometer. If the battery is fully charged it will read 1.275 or more. If you test AFTER you have filled the cells you will not get a true reading. Next in importance to watching the level of the electrolyte is the condition of the terminals. Keep them clean and covered wth vasoline. They slrould be removed now and again and al! corrosion scraped off. Remember that the sulphate on terminals is an insu- lator and will prevent the current flowing freely from the battery and will also prevent the generator giving it a full charge i you notice that the starting | | TO TEST ELECTROLYTE IN BATTERY INSERT MOTZLE IM CELL, SQUEEZE BULB AND ALLOW LIQUID TO RISE IN HYDROMETER. n increasing ever more rap: In domestic sales. ries throughout the world in date show a gain of approxi- 13460 Dodge Brothers cars &s over the same period of te the large increase in Brothers output, retail de- are running 100 cars a day »f production, and new retail 300 cars per day ahead of |; » Peerless Is Strong Demand |' tat they arc'not chafed or rubbed through at any point of Peerless automobiles last showed a decided increase in ions of the country, according res just released by Charles who was driving had to slip into i ales Manager of the Alls second s Motor Car company. | ——_. lo figures showed that last} - s sales throughout the coun- Valet AutoStrop r 6ic in Kimball Drug Stores.—Ady ry of this year combined, and 1 per cent greater than those rh, 1924.
