One wonders {f Larry Evans, who originally wrote the story for the Saturday Evening Post, ever sup- posed that his “Painted Lady" would move so glowingly in the Chester Bennett, the director has made the presentation strongly | dramtic, beautiful with the strange lure of the tropics. He has por- trayed the effect of the tropics on white men; has shown the stark ter- ror that ft holds for those unaccus- tomed to {ts thick, threatening nights; has made the tale creepingly real. George O'Brien, playing the lead, is particularly well fitted to the character of the seagoing lad who follows his love over seven seas, who pursues to the end of the world the man whom he rightfully hates, who fights to the last ditch for those things that he holds priceless. O'Brien {s a human hero in a most convincing film story. No Illy white hands tn this fellayy’s acting. He's good stuff and elx feet high. Dorothy Mackall] as “The Painted Lady,” delivers a finely polished— or should {t be finely painted?—per- formance. She has the power of emotion, the knowledga of women's hearts, and men’s too, the rythm of a true actress, Her {nterpretation of the character {s always in keep- Ing and always Interesting.
