Now you would likely reply to this question by an evangelical rhapsody that would be no answer at all, but I want a straight answer in modern language. I can only think of five things which may be meant. 1. Being saved from the punishment of origina! or imputed sin. One’s sense of justice repudiates responsibility for the sins of another. 2. From proneness to wrong-doing in our every-day life. You yourself in your public prayers make confession of numerous sins committed: and the hymn says “False and full of sin I am. With this attitude I cannot agree. The majority of us live harmless lives, and rarely do anything the recording angel would consider worth while. noting. 3. From sorrow, pain and penury in this world. Most emphatically we are not saved from these evils. 4. From eternal punishment hereafter. i I am sure that neither you nor any thoughtful man believes in Hell fire, or in any sort of everlasting pain in- of flicted by the infinitely loving Father, 5. From extinction or annihilation, i. e., Eternal Death. Man is either immortal jn his nature or not. If he is immortal no power can destroy him. ‘ What, then, do you mean when you speak of salvation? To this challenge from a business man who dares to think for himself, REV. A. a COOKE will reply in detail in First Congregational Church (AMERICA THEATER) Sunday at 11 o’Clock thinking man should hear this modern presentation of a supremely vital theme. Don’t miss it.
