SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 1925 PUBLICITY ON ORIDA PAYS BIG DIVICENDS State Reaping Harvest From Four Years Advertising. BY J. C. ROYLE (Copyright, 1925, Casper Tribune) TAMPA, Fla,, March 2'—Florida now is reaping the benefit of four years_of splendid newspaper adver- tising and of effective operation of the citrus exchange, The advertising hax-brought vieltors and investors in hundreds of thousands, while the op- erations of the exchange have made possiile the more profitable market: ing of a8 great crop. Thp advertising has been done laggély by cities, counties and com: Auniuies which have raised the neo- essary funds through taxation, dl- rect or indirect, or through individ- nal contributions. When winter visitors commenced so arrive in numbers, they taw the commercial, industrial and agricul- tural opportunities presented and started to Invest, This stimulated both the imagination and activities of the all-year-round inhabitants and they, too put thelr money Into the land and its resources. The present tremendous real estate boom has been the result. It is expected that the citrus fruit crop, up to the end of the shipping season, July 1, will range between 19 million and 22 million cases, Peter O. Knight, banker, capitalist, mer- chant and fruit grower, estimated today that the crop will sell at an average of between $4.50 and $5 a case. Certain it is that it will be more profitably and adequately mar- keted than for many years since ap- proximately 65 per cent of the grow: ers are disposing of their products under direction of the citrus ex- change with headquarters here. Markets have broadened for cit- j us fruits ag never before. Arrange- nts have been completed to export large quantities to Hngland and other north European countries. ‘This will inyolve pre-cooling plants at strategic Florida shipping points and and the marketing of fruit In good condition tn this country. Eng- lish imports have increased fully 100 * per cent in the last year. J ‘ttle difficulty 1s anticipated in handling the increase in orange pro- duction, according to W. F. Miller, of the West Indies corporation. The orange is an all-the-year-round fruit, but strong season for Valentia oranges {8 just starting and some frult Is bringing $5 a box on the trees. It is estimated tM{t for every old tree in bearing, there are at least two and a half trees which will be- gin to produce fruit in the next five years. With the slackening of pro- duction of old groves and exigencies of weather and insect perts taken in- to consideration, Mr. Miller places the citrus crop of 1930 at 30 million cases. Further development of mar- Jee therefore will be necessary and a fatdps already are being taken to his end. Preparations are under way for plants to extract essential olls which some experts regard as a greater source of revenue than the fruit it- self and for making fruit juices. Orange drinks now gre being pro- duced in quantity. A combination of orange, lime and grapefruit juices bids fair to become popular and ex- periments are being made in bottling grapefruit juice alone. Powdered lemon juice needing only addition of water already has been perfected and the Stewart Merrill in- terests are experimenting on a sim- {lar process for preserving orange juice, There are at least 12 citrus by-products. One plant at Abraham Park is turning out 100,000 pounds of candied peel annually. Marmalade and jellies also are becoming increas- ingly profitable. ‘The real future of the industry, ac- cording to Mr. Knight and Mr. Mil- ler, depends upon further improve- ment of systematic marketing which they say is bound to come. The for- mer advotates the attainment of ‘ this result through a gigantic mar ‘\. keting and distributing corporation *which would distribute the crop in a similar manner as the-banana crop ie distributed by the United Fruit compa Mr, Miller states that all the Florida grower has to do {s to learn to wait, to avoid throwing bis products on a flooded market and to ship only when conditions as well as the fruit are ripe. Try the 2 for 1 Store for a good revolver, jal has A ea Just one hundred years ago (1825) the first labor union attempted tn Boston also rerulted in the first as. sociaticn of employers. This associa tion of Boston merchants threatened to drive the union workers “to sub- mission or starvation,” and pledged $20,000 as a fighting fund. MISTAKE ENDS AM DREBBIN'S GHARMED LIFE By DANIEL LAWTON. (Copyright, 1925, Consolidated Press Association) WASHINGTON, March 21.— Kill- ed by mistake! How Sam Drebbin, soldier of for- tune, world war hero; friend of Gen- eral Pershing and adventurer extra- ordinary, would have laughed at such an epitaph? Yet such are the news reports from Los Angeles and they make the army officers, newspaper men and others who kuew Sam Drebbin, sad. “They'll never get me in action,” he used to say laughingly. “I've simply got a charmed life. It’s luck, that's all.” Yet Sam Drebbin was under fire almost always and his recklessness and utter lack of fear yielded him ribbons and decorations galore, including the distinguished service cross. “l've known Sam for a long time,” said General Pershing today, “He was with me in Mexico as a Scout and was very valuable and entirely reliable. The next time | saw him was in France, when I pinned the distinguished service cross on him. He had a splendid war reccrd.” Sam Drebbin would have made a wonderful soldier of fortune charac: ter for a Richard Harding Davis novel. He served several enlist. ments in the regular army as a pri- vate. He distinguished himself in action in the Boxer rebellion in China. When that was over, he was in revolutfons in Nicareugua and Honduras, There are many legends about his performances there, stories of how he rushed out under dire and saved wounded compantiona, stories of his bold attacks with a smaller number of men and other stories of individtal courage. When Mexico afforded a better opportunity for his military talents, he joined the Madero fo in the original rebellion agalnet Diaz and jater was with Orozco when the lat- ter turned on Madero. Sam was at his best in securing ammunition for the reyolutionists. He probably had more to with filibustering exped!- tions out of New Orleans and across the Mexican border at El 2aso than anyone else. He regarded it as a gamble and took all the chances in- volved In gun-running. After the revolution business sub- sided somewhat, Sam made a lucky strike in copper and was said to have amassed between $200,000 and $300,000. He went to New York and as expressed in his own words, “liv- ed like a millionaire.” Then he went back to El Paso. He lost a good deal of his money in oll speculations and then came the American entry Into the world way. Sam didn't like to try examina tions for an officer’s cOmmission. He felt he couldn't pass the writ.en examinations, The city of El Paso gave fam ao big banquet in sending him off to war, He had enlisted as a private, He soon became a first sergeant, He won honors on the battle field and when he returned to America he wus covered with decorations, including those from France a Italy While tn Parle, he was th of Genera) Pershing. A story of how he made a second Heutenint salute him, Officers often grew tir ed of saluting but when one of them ignored Sam's salute, he ran back @ few steps and planted himself aquarely in front of the second lieu: tenant and forced a salute. For Sam knew the reguistions. He had been in the regular army a long time. And row they say Sam w: a wrong dose of medicine in a doc- tor’s office.
