Blake Kennedy in federal-court fo two years in the federal penitentiary at Leaven- worth, Kans. ‘With a similar charge against him Jack Gordon was found guilty by the jury after five hours’ delib- eration on one count, that of re- ceiving stolen goods. He was sen- tenced to 18 months confinement at Leavenworth. Jeff Atwell and I, Barss, tried jointly with Hall and Gordon, were dismissed, evidence presented show- ing that they were not accomplices in the thefts. Hall, who is an ex-convict, sen- ten in Casper in connection with a %,000 diamond... some years ago, will probebly have to face other robbery charges on his release from the federal penitentiary, two state indictments being now fil- ed against him, The particular case in which Hall, Gordon and the other men were in- volved was the theft of a large quantity of sugar from a C. B. and Q. box car last December, The car was standing in the east end of the Casper yards and the sugar, pre- sumably for use in a_ still, was nsported by automobile. The au- omobile ran out of gas and the men were captured by the sheriff's office. Hall, out on bail, was accused of the robbery of the McCord-Brady warehouse here and disappeared. He was captured in a small Illinois town where he was going under an assumed name, extradited and re- turned here for trial. MESSENGER OF BANK BEATEN; MONEY TAKEN ST. LOUIS, Mo., Feb. 10.—Joseph ‘Williams, 50, negro messenger of the State Bank of Wellston, a suburb, was held up on a street car here to- day, beaten and robbed of $7,600. The three robbers escaped. CHEYENNE, Wyp., Feb. 10.—The situation of that use- ful 4nd necessary public official, the justice of the peace, is as bad if not worse, than other county officials, in salary, office rent and other matters pretaining to his office. Ina county like Natrona that has grown rapidly in population and the business of the courts of first instance has become overworked tribunals, with as much business as the justices can stand up to, the salraies, allowances etc., are based on conditions and times when a justice of the peace was lucky if he had two cases a week The legislative committee from Cas- per, acting for county officers gen- erally, have proposed the following relief by amending present statutes in a bill now in the house: dustice’s Salary In precincts having a population of more than fifteen hundred, jus- tices of the peace shall receive the fo'lowing annual salfries: In pre- cincts having a population of elght thousand or more, Two Thousand ($2,000.00); in precincts having a pop- ulation of five thousand or more and less than eight thousand, Seven Hundred Fifty Dollars ($750.00); in precincts having a population of Three thousand or more and less than five thousand, Six Hundred Twenty Five ($625.00) Dollars; and in precincts having a population of. fifteen hundred or more and less than three thousand, Five Hun- dred Dollars ($500.00). Justices of the peace in precincts having a pop- ulation or more, than’ fifteen .hun- dred shall collect the same fetr as provided in Section 6457 of the Wyo- ming Compiled Statutes’ of 1920, and shall pay the same in to the County Treasurer. The letters rogatory, requesting the French court to examine H. M. Blackmer and James E. O’Neil concerning certe!n aspects to the Teapot Dome naval oil re- serve annulment suit, left Cheyenne Saturday night and were delivered to Owen D. Roberts, special oil coun- sel for the Federal government, at Philadelphia Monday morning. The document was transmitted by air mail as a time-saving expedient. The examination of Blackmer and O'Neill 1 made in France, and the transcript their testimony transmitted to Cheyenpe before March the date set for trial of the Teapot Dome Suit. Clyde M. Watts, of counsel for the govern- ment replying to aseertion by coun- sel for the Mammoth Oi] company, defendant in the annulment suit, that it would probably be useless to issue letters rogatory as requested by the government because the tran- script of the desired testimony could not reach Cheyenne before the date of trial said that regardless of that there would be asked no further postponement of the trial. Resort to the air mail in transmitting the letters rogatory effected a saving in time of thirty six hours.
