SESE be PAGE TWO. POSTAL RATES ARE TAKEN UP INCOMMITTEE Senate Sub-Committee Calls Upon New for Details. WASHINGTON, ‘Dec. 23.—Post master General New was called to day before the senate postoffice sub- committee to explain details of t administration measure proposing increases in rates on practically all classes of mail matter except letter mail to take care of the advance in the pay of postal employes approved by congress but vetoed by Presi dent Coolidge. With a view to having ready 1 report on the bill before the senate takes up the president's veto of the salary bill on January 5, the sub: committee has set aside four days of this week for the hearing. It is the hope of Chairman Moses and the other members to conclude the hearings within that time so that a report can be made to the entire committee next week. The American Newspaper Pub- lishers’ association, through its vice president, John Stewart Bryan, pub- lisher of the Richmond, Va., News Letter, presented a protest from that organization against speed in n ing the hearings. Tho protest set forth that the postoffice department had been two years in preparing the cc tainment report on which posed mall rate adya: based, and that the publishe: be given reasonable time to study the report. It clared that in the brief time the re- port had been {n the association's hands, “many discrepancies in the statements of facts had been found. The protest asked that at least 30 days be given for analysis of the report. To this, Chairman Moses replied that tho senate committee had ordered speedy hearings with a view to making a report soon after the Christmas recess and that the subcommittee had no choice but to go ahead ei eee “MASKED MARVEL?
