WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1924 MR TRAVEL [3 AFEST, FIELD DFFIGERS SAY McCook Field No Place ‘to Talk of Flying Dangers By BERNARD J. LOSH. (Copyright, 1924, Consolidated Press Association) DAYTON, O:, Nov. 19—When any- body mentions. anything about the dangers of air travel in the presence of,g McCook field officer, that per- n lays himself open to a neat, verbal. chastisement. The McCook field officer will pull out a book and reat off a few sta- tistics. that go something like this: United States aviators flew 3,360 miles during 1923 with a loss of but 13 lives—one life for every. 605,000 miles. That is nearly 21¢ times around the world. For each 57,480 miles flown, there was ihe rt in which no one was injur- +He will produce figures disclosing that all the army officers together flew 75,778 hours during the year and that there were but 158 acci> dents in which 262 persons figured; he can show that, for every 479 flying hours, there was one crash and for each 4,209 flying hours, there was one fatality. He will then challenge his inter- rogator to show by a similar set of figures any other mode of trans- portation ‘that will not suffer by comparison, The table of statistics was prepar- ed by officials of McCook field. Where miles are mentioned, they ‘were computed by taking the speed of the slowest airplane in the ser- vice, ‘@ De Haviland, which has a speed normally of 120 miles an hour. A fable of facts and figures such as has just been compiled has long been sought by aviation enthusiasts, They felt all along they were esta- lishing records of safety in travel- ing, but could not support such an argument with facts. A curious fea- ture of the chart discloses that while 262 persons figured in the wrecks, tage 18 were killed, although in 68 per cent of the crashes, the alr: planes themselves were totally wrécked, In percentages, the chart gives) 11.82. por cent injured; 14.11 per ‘cent slightly injurei and 70.64 per cent got off scot free. vin Comprehensive reports cf every airplane accident are, sent:»n to Mc- Cook field. These are painstakingly terutfnized and something has been learned. from each crash. ‘Thus, they ‘have accounted for the cause or causes of all but 1.27 per cent of the crashes. They know at McCook field that most of.the*dscjdents ard due to me- chanical 7 and that ran! next as a:caus@ is faulty pilotage. Some have been due to structural weakness, others to faulty landing ui and some to adverse weather ditions. c Aeronautical experts at the Day- ton flying field say that the percent- age of/ miles flown during the cur- rent year will be greatly in excess of, the former years and that the fimbér of accidents and fatalities will be considerably reduced, All, of which, they claim, is proof indubitable that the airplane is the safest mode of travel yet devised by PARTISAN PLAY ISELIMINATED (Continued from Page One) inge<of present laws, but to render an opinion on the different propos- als pending in the last session of congress ‘for farm relie¢ and lastly it ig to concern itself with ways and means of promoting the study of co- cr) tive marketing. the last point it would not be surprising if the commission started a program of study “in the» land grant colleges ao that or aber ae marketing would be studied from th readertilo side just as business fasement and finance are studied in aration for tasks of the in- d al and manufacturing, world. Very helpful to the commission. agricultural commission to - work immediately after congress ad- journed last spring, but was advised ‘to whit till after-the-autumn -elec- tion so the issue could be taken out of politics temporarily at least.. Now the commission meets, therefore, in a favorableatmosphere. It need not think of what affect its proposals will have on any political party, in- deed, the chances are that if it can bring out an unanimous report, the Democrats. from agricultural states ‘will support Stas strongly as the Republicans. b; Another advantage which the com- mission enjoys is that no crisis or -1g immediately The condition of agricul: ture, while far from what must ult!- mately be desired if «stability. 1s to be experienced for any! length of time is nevertheless better than it was a year or two ago. Usually, if there is a_crisis in any particular industry the proposa's for relief are so extreme in character and the judges of the proponents warped by acute feeling that a calm consider- ation of the merits of any sugges- tion fs difficult. The new commission hopes to get fts report readv for the winter ses: sion of congress. That is optimistic, There are many reasons why action at the coming session would be de- sireble and even easy to obtain should there be an unanimous re- port from the commission.
