Ruth can’t be told that he is It can always be argued that an best man available for each position necessarily would not be a. great winning team. \Perhaps the Brook- ly Robins, with an ordinary team of ordinary plalers, who ywork to- gether, might be able to beat the Babe's team or the picked nine of any gther critic. oe In discussions of All-American .|.teams the argument generally winds ‘around to thi “Well, what team |’ could beat them " And that leads up to the next question: What is the best regular team in the major leagues that could be offered as op- position to an all-star team?” There are some difficulties attend- ing this as, in many cases, one or two players or maybe more would have to be taken out’ of the lineup 0@ the selected team to play on the All-Americans. There is only one player from the Pittsburgh Pirates mentioned on Babe Ruth's team—Cuyler, the sen- sational young outfielder. ‘We be- lieve that the Pirates, even without Cuyler in the lineup, could beat any all-star team picked to oppose them in a series of five games. At the tail end of the 1924 season, the Pirates looked to be the best ball club in the major leagues. Certainly they were the fastest. ‘Their dar- ing base running brought back mem- orles to the oldtimers of the day when base running was a great fac- tor in the attack and a thriller to the spectators. The Pirates are a young ball club. They look to be the big coming club of baseball. ‘There is no better outfield in base- ball than Cuyler, Carey and Moore, on the defense and on the offense. The infield—Grimm, Maranville, Wright and Traynor—is the fastest in the National League and almost on a par with Washington's great inner defense. In Smith and Schmidt they have the best catch- ing staff in the league, and Morri- son, Yde, Meadows, Adams, Kremer, Cooper, Pfeffer and some promising TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1924. er -before trying to make the for- ton backstop, is the best catcher inj ward toss. Frequently in the Dast it has been asked: “What is the matter with the Pirates?” Perhaps, for want of a better rea- son,,{t has been advanced by some very prominent critics, including Billy Evans, that the club hasn’t enough heart. To criticise them for a lack of gameness it would be necessary to point out one or two players who lacked courage, but looking thém over, player by player, there isn't one that we would like to accuse, unless we ne a good running start. ever that means. ‘They haven't the fire and impetus dash of the Washington Senators. They haven't the drive of the New York Giants or the perseverance of the Brooklyn Robins. “Perhaps it is that the club has become rather drab through the lack of a real colorful player. Grimm. and Maranville have what is called color, but they employ it in clown- ing. , Wright, Cuyler and Moore are not far enough out of the rookle stage to dominate and command a team on the field. Pie Traynor is easy-going ‘and so 1s Max Carey. Earl Smith, the former Giant) and Brave catcher, has a lot .of spirl put he spends too much of it on vidually, will fight on the field, but they haven't a player of the Pep Young type, who is the big _inspira- tion of the Giants. Cuyler has the makings of a great leader, and so has Moore, Perhaps supply that pep and drive which the club seems to lack. ee FOOTBALL QUESTIONS ADDRESS: Lawrence Perry, Special Football Correspondent of the Casper Tribune, 814 World Building, New York.
