HELEN WILLS AND PARTNER OLYMPIC STADIUM, COLOM- BES, France, July 19. (By the As sociated Press)—Miss Helen Wills and Mrs. George Wightman, the American pair, won the women's doubles championship of the Olym- pic lawn tennis competition, de- feating Miss Kathleen McKane and Mrs. Phyllis Covell in the finals to- day, 7-5, 8-6. ‘The American champion and her efficient partner took the champton- ship by fighting uphill battle in both sets from the leading two tennis playing women of Great Britain. The British pair got a lead of 5-2 in the first set, but the Americans came to time with a quickened pace, work- ing up to a speed that forced their opponents, particularly Mrs. Covell, into errors. Miss Wills was the bright and shin- ing light of the match. She played with a steady brilliance fn every part of#he court, Her service was the Cest of the four and her volleying was superior to that of Covell was the weak member of her team while Mrs. Wightman lacked her usual steadiness, falling into lapses at times, but she was ever-sound and steady when the situation looked dark for the Americans, Vincent Richards and Francis T. Hunter of the United States de- feated Rene La Coste and Lea Bor- ata, France, 6-2, 0-6, 3 in the semi-finals of the men’s doubles.
