PAGE, TWO. ~ RECLAMATION PROJECTS 10 BE SURVEYED Mead Orders Work To Start Immediately On Various Projects « WASHINGTON,. June 23.—Carry- ing out one. of the principal recom- mendations of Secretary Work’'s fact-finding commission, Commis- sioner Mead of the bureau of recia- mation today ordered a complete sur- vey ef government reclamation pro- jJect¥ to determine the financial con- dition of the water users and fix the irrigable areas against which charges may be assessed. The fact-finding committee has re- commended that the government charge of $27,000,000 representing as- sessments due for reclamation farm- ers who have settled on worthless lands. Congressional action, how- ever, will be necessary before these charges can be thrown out and also for fixing future charges on the basis of the relative agricultural. re- turn of the lands. In addition to the survey, Com- missioner Mead authorized field in- vestigations of five new projects dur- ing the summer including the pro- posed Owyhee and Vale projects in Oregon, the Salt Lake basin in Utah, Spanish Springs in Nevada and the Kittitas in Washington, MONDAY, JUNE 23, 1924, ienic Yesterday was a big day for tour, cmd goa Siriano ‘on the Alcova road. Maughan landed at McCook field from Mitchel field New York at 7:05 eastern standard time and took off at 8:16 in his third attempt to, span the continent fron dawn to dusk. Maughan covered the first lap of hia journey, New York to Dayton, $75 miles, in four hours and seven minutes, slightly better than the schedule he had planned. Progress of the flight was delayed one hour and 11 minutes here for repairs to a gasoline line. Mechanics at McCook field also placed wheels with darger tires on the ship While this was going on Maughan paced restlessly back and forth, but never once urged the mechanics “to, greater speed. Lieutenant Harold R. Harris, chief test pilot of McCook field, Who sup- ervised the work of the mechanics, said if the weakened connection had not been discovered. at McCook field, it would have caused the ter- mination of the flight.
