PAGE FOUR. _ @he Casper Dally eridune FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 1924, MELLON MAT BE PRESENT AT MEANS’ TRIAL Subpoena for Treasury Chief Issued at Washington. NEW YORK, June 20.—Subpoenas Were {ssued today requiring the. pres- ence of Secretary of the Treasury Mellon and his secretary, Arthur Sixsmith, at the trial of Gaston B. Means and Elmer; W. Jarnecke in federal court here next ‘Tuesday. Means, former agent of the depart- meht of justice and Jarnecke, his secretary are being’ tried before Fed- eral Judge Wolverton and a jury on charges of conspiracy to violate the prohibition law through the + with- drawal of liquor. ee SIELIGHTS OF CONVENTION (Continued from Page One.) ever, for me to have made any pub Me announcement until the Demo: crats of my home state, Tennessee, had acted. I am now delighted, be- be here to see that New York is cause of the unanimous endorse-| dry. Ment and instructions given to me in Tennesse, to say that I shall agree that my “name be presented to the conyention for this high office.” Headquarters of Governor George 8. Sjlzer of New Jersey for the presi- dential nomination were opened yes- terday. A meeting of citizens inter- ested in the governor's campaign will be held ‘this afternoon. The governor will not attend the meet- ing oF the convention, it was sald. The deepest dycd dark horse of the convention has been discovered in Franklin D. Roosevelt, Governor Smith's manager. Mr. Roosevelt has a full half vote pledged to him in the person of John H. Backus of New Bedford, Mass. The next darkest horse is Mayor Dever of Chicago. Mayor Dever w born in Woburn, Mass., and two Woburn delegates have flung their two half votes at his feet. Reports of a peace pact between W. R. Hearst and Goyernor Smith drew attention from Mr. Hearst's American today. It printed a box on page one headed: “It's News to Me, Reply of Hylan on Smith Truce.” Another story of the ac- tivities of Governor Smith and claims of his supporters was headed: “Smith's Count Shows Deficit.” The Herald Tribune had the fol- lowing page one heading: ‘Hearst- Smith Deal Is Called Day's Best Joke.” There are still a few convention seats left, it is announced. A ticket may be obtained for $100; a box for $2,000. The big chief of all the dry forces, Commiesioner Haynes himself, is to Hostesses to the women delegates have gone to school. Under the leadership of Mrs. John F. Hylan they took a trip on one of the city’s boats on which two eloquent city officials filled them with a line of chatter to be retailed to their guests. John T. Flood, assistant manager of the association against the pro- hibition amendment, claims that ap- proximately 135 convention votes will be cast by members of his or- ganization. No dry candidate can be nominated, he asserts, nor will there be a dzy plank. LEADING RIVALS LAUNCH FIGHT (Continued from. Page One.) fight was in the open. From that time on it ‘became an organized ef- fort to win the nomination and Franklyn D. Roosevelt, candidate for vice president in 1920, has been lead- ing the Smith forces), The governor himself now is in charge and his “handlers’ as they say in prize ring parlance, are certain that his admit- ted personal magnetism will stand him in good stead as he mingles with the convention visitors and dele- gates, PLES SEY 7 : Governor Smith is to most of those who know him well the typical New Yorker. There has been a long search in the past for thia type. I Al seems to fit it, is‘ real native son. The teeming Side, which has given New York City and New York State many of its leading politicans, nur- tured Al Smith and to this day much of its atmosphere clings to him, des- pite the polish and suavity the years have given him. He is a red fire campaigner and when his political travels take him back tothe East Side, his tour becomes a triumphal procession. 4 “Youse guys know me," says the governor, and from that time on he belongs to the crowd. 2 Mr. McAdoo has made an aggres- sive fight for the nomination and it is fitting that at the culmination of this fight he should be present in tion, than any Democrat in recent years, The McAdoo clubs which have been’ organized by his friends are nation-wide, They have been look- ing after the laterests of Mr. McAdoo ever since he moved to California some three years ago and by that move became a real. presidential posaibility. There is no denying the real en- thusiasm of the loyal McAdoo sup- porters. They simply can not see any other outcome of the convention than the selection of their favorite. Mr. McAdoo came into town to the accompaniment of cheers and his ad- herents in the convention are going to make the welkin ring every time his name is mentioned. They call their plans a “campaign of increas- ing enthusiasm.” The radio bugs who lsten in on the Democratic convention are going to have a far more hectic time than they had when the broadcasting was done from Cleveland. The Demo: crats are a noisy lot, The least little thing sets them going and the chairman has a hard time stopping them. In. Cleveland, the band and Dl SY A Yh Ge Ue oc ‘ Pine - ’ HE two reasons why you will stick to Blue Pine Coffee once you try it, are its superior flayor and ‘its ‘economy. Radio fans had better put on the loud speaker and keep the phones away from their , otherwise an -epl- demic of di ess is likely to sweep the country. Fortun the radio broadcasters have apprised of the habits and temper its of the Democrats ‘and ents have deen miade to “cut out” the cheering and applause after a brief interval “on the alr.” The announcers are to be placed in glass booths and from within these aweatboxes they will endeavor to describe and ex- plain the convention while the plat- form microphones are disconnected. The New York newspapers are giving so much space to. the Demo- cratic convention that most of the People in the metropolis think the convention is already in session. Most of these same people are just about as near the convention today as they ever will be. A whole lot of the arriving dele- gates are in favor of abrogating the rule which requires that a candidate shall receive two thirds of all the votes in the conyention before he can‘ be nominated. But no one, ap- parently, wants to bear the burden of starting the fight. With the rule still in force, the chances are the New York convention. will be the largest on record, extending over the fourth of July. t The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel has be- come the greatest presidential pad- dock the world has ever seen. It has become the headquarters for all of the “dark horses’ and at least one of the white ones, for Governor Smith has also opened a branch headquarters there and.has flung his banner all the way ross) Thirty- fourth street. The street politi- cal banner is almost a thing of the , verywhere except in provin- celal New York, which clung to the horse cars after every other village and town in the-country had - ed them. rif cing The weather is warming up. It always does for Democratic conven- Hons, except in San. Francisco. The New York conclave is Boing to be a shirt-sleeve affair.
