’ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, STORM PAGoING WR, 1S. BELIE Is Expected From Motorists. YUMA, Ariz, April 23.—Likell- hood of a recurrence of the situation which arose last week when several hundred motorists stormed the Cal jfornia-Arizona state line pridge here in defiance of Governor Hunt's foot and mouth epidemic embargo, appeared remote today as the new cavalcade of eastbound tourists which Yast Sunday’ began forming at Knob Siding 14 miles west of here, showed signs of weakening. Yesterday and last night the de- termined ¢aravan of fourteen motor parties demanding fumigation and admission to Arizona melted away under the blistering sun to an un- comfortable group of a half a dozen. These bitter enders were visited by Dr. BE. L. Stam, Arizona quaran- tine supervisor who announced on his return here that he had _per- suaded them to abandon the idea of motoring through Arizona. They planne to: turn back toward ‘the coast today, he said. WASHINGTON, April 23.—Call- fornia’s congressional delegation took a hand today toward securing relicf from the embargoes of adjoining states against Calffornia fruits and vegetables because of the foot and|- mouth disease. Cliff Reager, proprietor of the establish- ment, pleaded guflty March 3 and was, fined $300 and sentenced to 180 days, the latter penalty being suspended on good behavior. Routte’'s case went to the jury at o'clock today. The defendant ad admitted serving drinks over the bar but claimed that he had not taken the money for them and that he had regular employment with Reager as a cook. The system ‘used in handing out the drinks, according to the information con- veyed by the man on trial, was that of serving the lquor and letting the patron put his money on the bar which was tn turn picked up by the proprietor. Harry Cass, assistant county at- torney, was one of the witnesses for the state since he had accompanied raiding party. There were others who testified to having pur- chased liquor from Routte. It is understood the council generally endorsed the gov- ernment’s conduct in the matter. Extra precautions have been or- dered by the police to protect the persons and property of American residents of Tokio, Although some “patriots ’ are distributing hand bills warning of the approach of a Japan- ese-American war, thus far there have been no untoward incidents. Many speakers, while bitterly at- tacking the United States as a na- tion, are cautioning thelr audiences against violence Iccally, pointing out this would only be a boomerang to Japan. There are strong indications the government will maintain its policy against retaliation and will be able to enforce it. Calmness pervades ‘Tokio, due partly to a still lingering hope. that President Coolidge will veto the antiJapanese amendment to the immigration bill, and partly to the realization of leaders here that retaliation in any ferm not only would be futile but also would result in greater damage to Japan than to America since economic relations een the two countries are more ul to Japan than to the United States. 5 30 KILLED, 50 HURT IN WRECK BERNE, Switzerland, April 23.— Thirty persons are reported to have been killed and fifty tnjursd. when the Zurich and Milan exprosses collided near Bellinzona this morn- ing.
