FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 1924 OIL INFLUENCES IN. COLOMBIAN ‘WASHINGTON, March 14.—While ths off committe was tn recegs today, the senate got into a squabble over @ report from Secretary Hughes in response to a senate request for In- formation as to possible of) tn- fluences tn negotiation of the Colom- Dian treaty. Asserting the report had a speci- fic ing “upon the Fall case,” Senator Dill, Democrat, Washington, contended it should be referred to the ofl committee. Senator Lodge, the Republican leader, wanted it re- ferred to the foreign relations com- mittes, and his demand finally pre- fed. The senate resolution had been adopted after attention had been called to the fact that the treaty. after having been pigeonholed for many months, was brought out and ratified after interior secretary Fall had asked that action on it be taken to protect American ofl interests in Colombia. His airplane was badly damaged in landing but he and the mechanic escaped injury. Breene, who left the Cheyenne field yesterday morn- ing, was forced down at Evanston, Wyoming at about noon yesterday, and took off from Evanston this morning. aba = LS SUMMARY OF NIGHT NEWS WASHINGTON—Honduran revo- lutionists bave captured Ceiba, com- pletely routing de facto government forces, reports said. a GENEVA — Authority of the League of Nations to bring {ts ma- chinery to bear for the peaceful set/| tlement of international disputes was upheld fn a report of interna- tional jurists. (Copyright .1924, Casper Tribune) 4 WASHINGTON, March 14.— Thé Teapot Dome ‘scandal” has to date failed to develop “criminal culpabtl- ity” on the patt of any of the per- sons mentioned in the controversy and {t has not yet proved that the oil leases made by the government Were disadvantageous. ‘This is thg status of the Invest! gation which has had many sensa- tional exposures but which so far as legnl consequences are concerned has not convicted anyone. The testimony of Edward B. Mc Lean, Washington publisher. from whom revelations were expected fell flat, His naive confess'on that “he had gone down the line for a frienc!’ and had made an untrue statement about the $100,000 he was alleged to have paid Albert B. Fall is accepted here as more than like- ly to have been the cause of the mysterious drawing of checks which were never cashed. After all the testimony 1s sifted, one thing stands out as unexplained and as likely to produce interest ing consequences. Was Albert B. Fall as secretary of interior who made the leases for his old friend, Prevent Crippe- _ build resistance “with te SCOTTS it EMULSION GAS HEATER Make your selection now while this sale is on Radiant Fire and all other gas heaters in stock. 10% REDUCTION The Casper Gas Appliance Co. The special counsel for the gov- ernment are going on the theory that the leases were not in the in- terest of the government and should be annulled. Mr. Fal! himself has taken advantage ef his constitu. tional rights and declined the ques- tions, So the senate committee cannot determine whether Mr. Fall was guilty of accepting a bribe or whether the leases which he made injwed the government. All the other testimony relating to conversations with Edward B. McLean became irrelevant . unlesa it can be proved that Mr. McLean was connected !n some way with the making of the leases priginally. And no evidence of that kind has been secured. Even if he had exer- cised his influence with Mr. Fal! he could not be prosecuted for it_be- Daily Cribune cause he is not a member of the United States government. It would have to be proved that he entered @ conspiracy to defrau@ the govern- ment and there is no evidence of that before the committes. The senate has not®yet called H. F. Sinclair nor has it renewed tts examination of E. L. Doheny and it is said that the same reasons for wishing the courts to supoenae Mr. Fall apply’ to these two men who will undoubtedly. be witnesses in the civil cases which are to follow. All the minor witnesses Who are testifying as to conversations with or between themselves to and from Mr, McLean have failed to produce anything. It has been an interesting disclosure’ of how a Washington publisher with a home here and in Palm Beach keeps in touch with things and how friendly he is to public officials and how far he stretches his friendship to shield a member of the Harding cabinet—all Takes pills for years—finds first == permanent relief in Kellogg’s Bran |: Have you found permanent relief from that terrible disease—constipa- tion?
