PAGE TEN HELIGOPTER 10 Alot STRAIGHT FROM GROUND Tests Indicate That New | Machine Will Be | Big Success TULSA, Okl Feb. £7.—A new! type helicopter {s being construct-| ed here by Wesley B. Beard, assist. mechanic of Cosden and} aided by army aeronau-/| rs from McCook Field, | Dayton >. The army office: are of the opinion the craft will ris vertically from the ground, as soon| as a few alterations have been| made. Preliminary tests showed that, with the motor running wide open. & man could lift the 1,500 pound machine from the floor with one hand. It was found that the motor was not getting a full throttle of gasoline however, because the air intake was in the vacuum created between the opposing propellers. The plane of the helicopter is two airplanes facing, with the motor be- twen them. When running the motor creates a vacuum in the cen- ter of the machine and throws the collected air out towards the oppos- mg wings. The air reaching the wings at a velocity of more than 100 miles an hour create the lift to the planes and the machine, it ts hoped, through that agency can be| sent into the atr. The helicopter {s equipped with a 220 horsepower Hispono-Suisa mo- tor, four propellers, six wings and two pairs of elevators. Civil War Vet, 78, Proves Up On Homestead NEWCASTLE, Wyo., Feb. Ot the advanced age of 78, M. Hankins, ciyil war veteran, h made final proof on his 640-acre homestead at Black Thunder near here. No claim that “I’m just as young as I used to be” is made by Hankins, nor has anyone ever seen test!monials for potent gland | medicines bearing his picture. | till, the fact that he has suc- j ssfully battled a section of wild | rie for the past three years, ly winning out, 1s evidence he is far from superannuat- | . | Cowboy Hankins of Black Thun- | der, Wyo., is a name and address | that will send a thrill through | old buddies gathered in the twi- | light of life back in the old sol- dier's home in Illinois, the state from which Hankins came Wyoming. WIFESLAYER | SHOOTS SELF BREEN BAY, Wis., Feb. 27.—G. ‘W. Tuttle, believed to be from Car- Usle, Wesh., shot and instantly kill- ead his wife and himself here last at the home of Mrs. A. Rice as it ‘was reported today. No motive for the acts are known to the authorities as yet. A coron- ers investigation is under way. << Three Drowned When Car Goes Into Big Ditch TOMBSTONE, Ariz, Feb. 27.— Two boys and on girl were drowned when an automobile, car- rying eleven persons plunged over an embankment into an irrigation canal on the SBenson-Tombstone highway, 14 miles west of here yes- terday. . The dead who were pinned be- neath the machine in eight foot of water, were: Cecilia Lopez, 16. Carlos Cales, 13. Jesus Herindez, 17. The driver of the machine, Jose Abuna, is being held here and au- thorities announced a charge of manslaughter would be filed against him. to | The Great Secret Everyone is interested secret of success.
