World Results By Leased Wire | RUTH TO DRAW $62,000 A YEAR FOR THREE MORE YEARS, REPORT Exercise of Two-Year Option Means Sh Will Make Over Two and Half Million Dollars in Five-Year Period, NEW. YORK, Feb..5.—Babe Ruth’s contract with the New York Yankees has three years more to run at an an- nual figure of $52,000. This, it was said today, is the result of the club’s decision to exercise the two-year op- tion it received when the home r year agreement in 1923. salary will be a quarter of a million for the five-year period, but from a variety of sources, including barn- storming, his earnings may double that anrount. An interesting story ‘is told of the conference between Ruth and Col. ..L. Huston, former part owner of the Yankees, at which the contract was signed. After agreeing on $50,000 as his yearly salary, Babe gald: “Now I ought to have $10,000 for signing.” Col. Huston demurred at first but finally suggested that they “shake” for it. They rolled out a pair of dice and Ruth won, but it was then Bereed that the $10,000 be dis- tributed at the rate of $2,000 an- nually, thus practically boosting the salary to $52,000. One clause of the contract is de- signed to keep Ruth on the straight and narrow path of good conduct. Under it the Yamkees hold back the walary of every other month until the end of the season when the slug- ger is handed a check for $26,000. Last fall, he spent a good share of this amount in adding tmprove- ments to his winter home and farm at Sudbury, Mass. After being panned all around for more than four years, it Is quite likely that he was prepared for the four fights and it is certain that he didn’t take it too muck to heart. However, he has something to take to heart. He knows that his right hand is gone. He has had enough experience to know that after a fist has been fractured sev- eral times, it is a dangerous la- bility. His right hand has been fractured before. It has been pointed out frequently of late that his hands were too fragile. His last fight against a punk in Newark showed clearly that he hesitated to put all his force behind his punches because he knew that his hands were not able to stand the impact. Wills never can beat Dempsey without @ right hand. There is evidence to show that a two-handed fighter can’t beat the champion and it is a cinch that a one-handed fighter can never do it, The only chance he would have to knock out Dempsey would be with one punch of his right hand, figuring that even if he broke his hand again with the punch, Demp- sey would not be able to get up for another one. Wills certainly can't get any more force behind his right hand than Firpo put in a dozen that landed flush’ on Dempsey during their fight last summer. If Wills could hit Dempsey a: hard'as Firpo did he certainly would break his hand and Dempsey cer- tainly would come up—even if he went down. oe “Pop” Stribling, in a bout down south recently, jumped into the ring and took a punch at the referee who had’ disqualified his boy for holding. “Young” Stribling {s a promising fighter. He is one of two or three youngsters being developed who looks like he might some day be heavyweight championship material. Stribling has a long way to go and the road, which is hard enough, will be made rougher for him ff he has to overcome the handicap of family interference. There are numerous cases to prove the point that a boxer is bet- ter off when he keeps his relatives at home. Jack McAuliffe, the retired light- weight champion, had his brother in his corner for several fights and he said that he couldn't stand it. Any number of promising young boxers in these modern days has had the same experience and as a rule it will not work. eee “A strange allegation has been made by a well-known hockey inter- national, who claims that the game is deteriorating because many play- ers prefer to gpend their afternoons 5—(United Press)—Harry Wills will go down on the books as one of the hard luck champions if he never gets some- thing more imposing to hang to Wills not only is unfortunate in running up against bad breaks that work to his individual loss, but he has had the bad luck to furnish constantly material for those who have an interest in making him He lost at least $25,000 in actual cash and the chance to force a bid for the championship recently when he cracked his right hand while training for four well paying bouts. ORIGINAL HARD-LUCK ‘CHAMP’, FARRELL DECLARES dancing instead of on the hockey fleld."—A London clipping. About this grave subjbect, a Lon- don paper comments: “There cannot be Englishmen— scheme of national sport—who de- Hberately will forsake a virile, man- ly game in order to jazz on an after- noon when their fellows are striving valiantly and gallantly to defeat a formidable rival. “To me it seems an impossibility. Let us dance by all means, but at the right time and not during those hours that can be devoted to sport.” That's a durn tough situation! A Briflsh referee was trying to pull the principals out of a clinch during the Frush-Matthews fight when Frush fell to the floor, claim- ing a foul. e The referee refused to grant the claim and later when the same thing happened he stopped the fight and would not give a decision. His official statement was: “I was disengaging Matthews’ arm at the moment Frush received the blow and I was unsighted.” Unsight is no qualification for @ referee. Same Course and Golf Score After Space of 25 Years PINEHURST, N. C.—1{United Press)—On either side of the great open fire place in the foyer of.the country club here is a collection of carefully Preserved mementos and among them is a silver dnd amber cup. F The inscription shows the cup was. presented to George C. Dutton away back in the Inst century, for the best gross golf score achieved that year. ‘The cup was the first irophy ever offered here and was given by James Tufts, founder of Pinehurst, to the man making the highest score during the season of 1598- It was won by Dutton with a card of 81 made on the last day of the season over the original course, Preylously W. Smith, also of Boston, was leading. in the race with @ acore of 83, An unusual coincidence occurred here when these same golfers, play: ing in the Advertiser's tournament met and arranged a match over t! same course. Dutton won the match with a medal round of 81, the same score with which he defeated Smith a quarter of a century ago. The two golfers have agreed to try it again in 1949. ‘SKINNY LIKE A SCARECROW’ Don't Let Folks Say This About You—It’s Easy Now to Put on 10 er 20 Pounds of Firm Healthy Flesh.
