The loss of a few seconds around a corner or curve may make all the difference between winning or losing the race. However, when you and I are out on the road, seconds are not so important to us as arriving at our destina- tion safely. The tow car and repair shop would not be nearly so busy as they sometimes are, and accidents would be considerably reduced, if every driver would observe a few simple rules when round- ing curves and corners. Y Here we have a curve going up a hill. Few drivers like to coast down a hill slowly, nor is it neces- sary to do so if you have a straight hill that is not very steep. Sup- pose, however, you are driving up a hill and there is another car in front of you, think of the risk you run, if, just to save a minute or two, you pull out and try to pass the car ahead of you while it is on a curve. If there is another car coming down the hill, it will probably be travel- ing at a fair speed, and if you pull out to pass the car ahead, it may be | tempt to pass another car on a 3830x314 Weed De Luxe. 4 00 curve on a hill. If the hill is very steep, always change down to a low gear beforeyou start down the hill, and use the hand and the service brakes alternately. If you use one brake con- NEVER ATTEMPT TO PASS A CAR ON A CUR’ QV A TULL. KEEP WELL TO RIGHT SIDE OF ®OAD UNTIL YOU ARE AROUND BEND road into which you are turning. If you are traveling at any pend: you have to pull your car around the corner sharply, and not only put a severe strain on the wheels and tires, but you also run the risk of collision with any car that is near- ing the same corner on the street into which you are turning. If, however, you are out on an |open road, such as that illustrated, |you can take corners a little faster than you do in the city, and the best way to take them is to pull out near the center of the road, then with a gradual sweep, turn around the corner and be on the proper side of the road immediately ¢ou turn the corner. That is every transaction on a motor vehicle must be recorded just as the sale of a house and lot is recorded. The first buyer gets a deed from the manufacturer in which the ma- chine is described. The license num- ber issued for it remains always un- changed. When he buys the car he is required immediately to record the transaction at an automobile bureau. Should he desire to sell the car he must show his “fee simple” deed to the purchaser and both seller and buyer must appear at the automobile bureau to record the change in ownership. A thief who attempted to ' second Rickenbacker car. sell a stolen car would find himself in immediate trouble for the records at the bureau provide a space “or L. D. W. P. Young, general manager of the Eastern Autoinobile Underwr ters Conference, a central organization of automobile theft insurance com- panies, estimated for the writer to- day that 8,000 automobiles, averag- ing in value $1,000 each had been stolen in New York state during 1923. Of these slightly less than half were recovered. The remaining 4,- 000 and more—worth between $4,- 000,000 and $5,000,000—were dispos- ed of by auto “fences” in cities far removed from the scene of the thefts. Of course, a mere state law for registration of all auto transactions would check only a part of this tra fic. But Commissioner Enright is hopeful of obtain'ng similar laws tn other states or perhaps even a fed- eral law regulating trading in this easy to steal commodity. attend a convention of Nash dealers in the Rocky Mountain states.
