BRAFORD (United Press Staff Correspondent.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 8—(United Press.)—Harkening back to the great battle of the Somme, during the World war, the army transport of that name, bearing a number of army officers and other Son rol will sail late today from New York to attend joint military and naval maneuvers for the purpose of deter- mining the value of the Panana canal in the defense of the United States in time of war. H During the past week the great | men o’ war of the Pacific and Amer- ican fleets have been moving from their respective stations on the two coasts to take the parts assigned them in the euvers at the Panama canal zone. Major General John L. Hines, the deputy chief of staff of the war department, who is the chief umpire of the maneuvers for the army, and the other army umpires are sailing from New York this afternoon on the Somme. Also on the Somme are a large number of writers. Admiral Robert E. Coontz, com- mander-in-chief of the combined United States fleet, and the chief | umpire of the navy, already has| left New York on his flagship, the battleship Seattle, The other navy umpires likewise have left on their respective ships. The maneuvers to test the Panama canal defenses may bring about six- nificant changes in the system of defense of the United States. The great war game is to be based on the assumption that relations sud- denly have become strained to the danger point between the United States and certain other imaginary powers which are approximately equal to this country in resources, |} man-power and naval strength. But early in! January—the maneuvers are to be held from January 16 to 22—the “black fleet,” the enemy, appears on the horizon in the middle of tho North Atlantic ocean and causes the “blue government,” the United States, to sall at full steam for the Atlantic through the Panama canal. The Atlantic fleet will represent the “black fleet,” while the Pacific fleet and the Panama canal depart- ment of tho army will remain “blue’. The safety of the canal during the passage of the Pacific fleet will depend upon the army garrisons there, totaling a strength of about 9,000 officers and men. In- structions for the war game have been sent in selaed orders, not to be opened till noon on January 14, to Governor Morrow of the Ranama canal zone, the admiral of the United States fleet and the com- manding general of the Panama canal department. Greer, was ited from Los by a secret process, First Presbyterian REV. CHARLES A. WILSON On this occasion of the reception of new members, and the observance of the ordinance of the Lord's Sup per, it is well to refresh our con ceptions of the historic significance of the name we bear as Christians, and the name of the body of believers included by the term Christianity. To be a Christian is to bear a name romantic in history. To trace that derision in Antioch, would take us through the perilous days of persecu- tion of Nero. Domitian Diocletian and other Roman emperors who sought to exterminate the Christian religion; through the trials and ad- ventures of the Middle ages, and the dark and doubtful movements of more recent centuries when modern istory was in the making. Once the name Christian was given in re- proach, but of it no one need ever be ashamed. What is Christianity? It is faith in God issuing in a moral life, and a ritual of worship. It is the life of God lived by men upon earth through the eternal Christ. It is a vital force within, and thus begun it issues in thought, in feeling, and in action. In thought it Decombys action, conduct. | When we begin to think about | Christ,-we begin to form conceptions of his personality. Every Christian should main- tain perpetually the highest possible standards of conduct in his daily walk before God and men, and thus demonstrate by everyday consistency the power of the life of faith within to produce without the invincible argument for the Christian life. Trinity Lutheran REV. J. H. GOCKEL (The first of a series of sermons on Bible stories illustrating the Ten Commandments.) What difficult test was applied to Abraham in Genesis 22 God commanded him to sacrifice his only son Isaac. Abraham showed that he feared God, not with slavish but with childlike fear, by immediately setting out on the journey to the place of sacrifice. Much as he loved his son, his obedience showed that he loved God more. His son was also the son of promise; on him rest- ed the promises which God had given Abraham, namely, that he should be the father of many nations, and that one of his descendants should be the Promised Messiah and Savior. But how should these promises be ful- filled if he sacrificed fi!s only eon? Abraham trusted in God, in His word and promise, “accounting that God was able to raise Isaac up even from the dead” (Hebrews 41:17-19-. Here, then, we have en excellent illustration of the @uties laid upon us by the First Commandment, which WOMEN! The Tribune God, Son, and Holy Spirit. But this prohibition implies a com- mand, namely, that we make the one true God our God. We learn fron Abraham how ona does :hat—by fearing, loving, and trusting in God above all things. To fear men, pub- lic opiriion, ridicule, more than ons fears to disobey God is idolatry. love a person or thing, family “or money or self, more than God is idolatry. To trust in man, in one’s strength, skill, or wisdom, more than. in God is idolatry, To doubt God's word and promises, even under the greatest trials, is a transgression of this First Commandment. Who, then, ic guiltless? Let us j acknowledge our guilt, repent of our |lack of fear, love, and confidence in God, and seek forgiveness in the name of the Savior who was again promised in verse 18 of this chapter. Isaac bearing the wood of his own ‘sacrifice is a type of Christ bearing His cross to Calvary. His perfect righteousness covers our unrighte- ousness. His suffering and death on the altar of the cross atones for our sins, also for our sins against the First Commandment. His great love for us awakens in our hearts true love to God, the love from which flows grateful obedience to all of , God's commandments.
