AN unusual experiment to prove the exceptional durabfity of the satin wax body finish on the new 1924 Oaklana open models was re eently carried out by the distributor of this company in Francisco In the presence of Roy Thornbery, for the Thorn nd a group her con extinguist | fen! evere test ever given int Job, proved that the stren: the sulphuric acid contained in the fire extuguishing chemical had no effect whatsoever. 4fter it was rubbed off and the side of the car polished, no damage was noted. Murlatic acid, also, was put on the paint but likewise failed to mar it. “I didn't believe a paint was made that would withstand = sulphuric acid,” Mr. Thornberg said test, “I have seen the surfac many paints up under an ac test. The coloring materials us in paints are usually composed of pulverized bits of oxidized metals and minerals. Because of this oxy- je they are very suscoptible d. I never saw anything lika this in my life and did not know such a thing was possible.” The acid discharged from the fire extinguisher was so strong that it left scars on the enamel of the car in several spo’ SALT SOLUTION GUTS CARBON FROM ENGINES Salt effectively removes carbon from gas mantles and the sooty de posit in chimneys. This led to ex- periments to determine if it would have any effect in removing the car- bon deposits in gasoline engines. The xesults were gratifying. A small tank containing salt dissolved’ in water ‘was connected by a tube to a spray nozzle, tapped into the inlet mani fold of the engine. After the engine had been operated until it had be- come quite warm, the valve of the tank was opened and the engine drew in some of the solution at every intake stroke. The carbon was blown out through the exhaust {n the form of a powder. The engine which was used for the experiment had knocked badly, and when climb- ing a steep grado, it was noce: to use low gear because of pr ignition. After the experiment the knocking had ceased and it was pos- sible to climb the same grade in high gear without any difficulty.—Auto- mobile Digest.
