There is no question | but what the four-wheel brakes add @ great measure of safety especially in the unexpected emergency be- cause it {s practical to use them on slippery places and at high speed ite elther slow down or stop without skidding, impossbile with rear brakes alone, without disaster. The chief criticism against the four-wheel system appears to be the results of braking hard at the wrong time but we all know what occurs | When rear wheel brakes are applied on a slippery turn. The four-wheel brakes can be used for a very quick stop where rear types cannot be used at all; that is, where a skid would result. Now regarding skid ding with brakes it would seem to most of us that the place to drag a car, and keep the front end front, would be the rear end, but if we slide the rear wheels with rear wheel brakes, the rear end tries to get ahead of the front. It would do so unless we so steer as to keep the rear end balanced behind the front end so it cannot get around either way, and this is not practical if we are in a turn. ‘With the four-wheel brakes it is impossible to make the rear end do anything but follow the tracks of the front end which shows there must be something wrong with our theory as to which the brakes should be on. A car with front wheel brakes cah be stopped in haif the distance {t can with rear wheel brakes and without akidding, due to the center of gravity being thrown forward, making more weight on the front. The possibility of sliding the front wheels and losing steerage way is not as Ikely as it-appeara due to the throwing forward of the weight on to the front end. Any tendency to skidding can be instant- ly stopped with the front wheel Drakes by @ alight reduction of Pressure on the pedal. With brakes on all four wheels we have a much better condition. With equal pressure the distance required to bring the car to a com- | plete stop can be reduced 25 per nt over the best rear wheel brake stop and there will be no skidding nd very ttle Mability of losing steerare way, because with an ali rupt stop the car weight is shifted Y so hard to the front wheels that it is nearly tmpossible to slide both. In making an abrupt atop on a turn it will be found that both front and rear wheels on the inside of the turn will slide but both outside ones will roll, due to the centrifugal force of the turn throwing the weight on to the outside wheels, and the rapid stopping throwing the This means that the outside forward wheel sustains most of the car weight and holds the road, consequently there is lit- tle danger of the car sliding. If the front wheel rolls there will be no the torque of the brake without twisting, and the front wheels must ~|be sturdy enough to withstand the terrific side thrust on the outside wheel in the turn which is greater than any strain rear wheels have to withstand due to the car weight being thrown outward and forward. I believe that a car with any ar- rangement to lessen the efficiency of the front wheel brakes, or to en their application on a turn, tem when used with « little judg. | Wheel brakes, that ta, if the king pin ment will stop the car quicker, bet-| 18 inclined so that if extended it ter and safer than rear brakes with | Would touch the ground in line with considerable Judgment in their ap-|the center of the tire, which is satan sss tym ng Se A factor to be considered is that | the cen! with a low, heavy et with four-| drawback ts concerned, that equal- wheel brakes you can throw into aj ization is nearly as necessary as silppery turn at high speed and stop | With rear wheel brakes only.
