JOLAYER FAGING TRIAL DESPITE hla GONFESai8 Jury May Pass on Case Of Alex Kels, Murder Hoax Perpetrator. STOCKTON, Cal., Oct., 8—(United Press)—Despite the fact that he has pleaded guilty to a charge of mur- der, Alex Kels, Lodt butcher, may yet face what amounts to a trial. It may even go as far as empanell- ing a jury to pass on his case. Officers, it was learned tontght, have serious doubts as to whether the whole story of the murder of a still undentified stranger, to which Kels has confessed, has been told ‘These doubts involve two points: First {1 the question of whether Kels ts sane, Second, members of the proxecu- tion have informally admitted there !s a doubt as to whether he told the whole truth in his confession. Kels admitted in his written state- ment that he killed a man Indentified by him only as “Mac” and permitted burial of the body by Mrs. Kels as that of his own, saying that he did so in order that Mrs, Kels might col- lect his $105,000 life insurance. Tt was learned tonight that sey- eral persons who might give testl- mony fn case of n jury trial have been located by the sheriff's office in case they might be needed. It was believed that thesq persons would be called in case the prosecu- tion might seck to show that Kels knew the man whom he killed and that some other motive than the one named in his confession actuated him. Kels, questioned by officers today, hung to his story and maintained he “had told everything. Ho was po;ticularly emphatio tn denying that there was a woman in the background. “It 1s terrible to think of thd women whom I know being drawn ee FOR RENT—Modern sleepingroom,|FOR FR for one or two, Call at rear door, 143 ~N.
