Ghe Casper Daily Cribune TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1923. INE YOULL L Everyone loves to hate the villain. Therefore, when an actor playing ane of these ungrateful parts suc- ceeds in getting himself cordially @isiiked {t is an indication that he has achieved success in the charac- ter. Such is the case of Sidney Her- bert, who plays Twyning m the W1- Mam Fox screen version of “If Win- ter Comes,” A. S. M. Hutchinson's famous novel, which will be shown at the America theater commencing @ four day run tomorrow. Those familiar with Hutchinson's book recall the cunning, hypocriti- cal, whimpering person, woh, using every unfair device, sought figura tively to cractfy Mark Sabre to sat- tsfy his own gree¢ and ambition. Twyning even went so far as to at- tempt to have Sabre convicted in the death of Effie Bright and her child, the father of which later was proved to be Twyning’s own san. And then the pitiful selfishness of the man who, when Sabre comes seeking to avenge these wrongs, lets himself believe that Mark has come to offer sympathy for the death of his son at the front. You hate Twyning with ® vengeance that is increased by the | contrast drawn by Percy Marmont as Sabre, generous to a fault, sym pathetic even to his enemy. “ASEY IN PANAMA” (5 COLUMBIA SHOW The High Life Revue company effers for a three-day run starting today, “Casey in Panama.” It fs a musical comedy with a southern setting that is rather cheerful in contrast to dull October weather. It is sufficiently funny to drive away all the blues in the world. Peck, Walker, and Floral will be geen at their best in “Casey in Pan- ama.” There will be a number of clever specialties, sors of them presented by the Harmony Trio, a group of who are retaining their pop- ularity with Columbia audiences. “Steel Heart’ 1s the photoplay. It has “William Duncan” in the leading role. eee “THE BRIGHT SHAWL” COMING 10 THE TANS A picture representing the most ambitious undertaking Richard Bar- thelmess has yet made for the screen fs coming to the Iris theater tomor- row and Thursday. It ia the film version of Joseph Hergeshetmer's tremendously popular story, “The “Bright Shawl,” dealing with the days of Spanish oppression in Cuba. In order to obtain the proper atmos-! phere, a large part of the story was filmed in Cuba, the balance being made in. New York. John 8, Rob- ertson, responsible for such produc- tions es “Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde” and “Sentimental! Tommy,” was the irectorial genius behind the camera. Barthelmess has perhaps the most romantic role of his entire screen career, that of an adventurous young American who takes up the cause of the rebela and incidentally falls in love with the daughter of a rebel leader. Young couples who get married without knowing each other's char- acters and tastes are doomed to fail- jure, he says, and the majority of those supposedly wo'l mated usu- ally wind up in the divorce courts. Especially interesting was the approval of the prinictpala an featured members of the cast and of the directorship. It proved a rev. elation alike to the industry and to the theater-goers. Some of the unusual points in connection with this picture are: Ths discovery of a star — Mary Philbin, who only a few short years ago was a Chicago high school girl. Some dne entered her in a beauty contest run by the Hearst newspapers, and when it was over she ~was found to be second choice. Carl Laemmlo, president of the Unt. versal Pictures Corporation, saw her photograph and arranged a screen test, which she passed satis- factorily, The dainty Uttle miss was then started on a severe course of training in small parts, gradually increasing !n importance until fin- ally she was deemed ready for star- ring honors. she began work In the “MerryGo- Round” with the best wishes and confidence of the entire studios, but even were unprepared for the excention- portrayal she gives in the path- role a little organ grinder on the prater, the Coney Island of Vi enna. In selecting the artists the cast- ing director spent many weeks in galng over lists of available play-| ers in order to get types that were true to life.
