ms A WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 1923. fhe Casper Daily Cribune LUQUE WINS QVER STENGEL BUT DROPS GAME TO THE GIANT CLAN New York Outfielder Attacked by Cincinnati Hurler; Phillies Trim Pirates Again at Ball Park in Pittsburgh. CHICAGO, Aug. 8.—(By The Associated Press) .—Fisti- cuffs varied the monotony of the champion New York Na- tionals winning streak in Cincinnati yesterday, when Adolfo Luque, the Cincinnati Reds’ Cuban pitcher, knocked out of the box, attacked Casey Stengel when the New York Giant outfielder twitted him for his. generosity. Luque won his game with Stengel, 1 to 0, and the Giants beat the Reds 6-2. It was their fifth victory of the Cincinnati series. The Giants left for St. Louis with a lead of seven and a half games. In Pittsburgh the Philadelphia Na- tlonals continued their winning streak by defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7 to 5, and making it three out of four for their series there. Willlams made a homer. The St. Louis Nationals hit Barnes and Benton of the Braves and won the final game of the series with Boston, 7 to 5. Stock and Flack lined out a homer a piece. A thrilling battle in which eight pitchers took part was staged at the Yankee Stadlum. The St. Louis Americans, by using five hurlers to the New York Yankees’ three, won in large numbers, 12 to 10. The St. Louis team made six runs off Shaw- key snd six off Jones. Mays was put in at the end. Ken Williams, Witt and Schliebner made home runs. ‘The Cleveland Indians inundated the Washington Americans under a storm of runs, without..the ald of asingle homer and won, 22 to 2. The Philadelphia Americans trim- med the White Sox in Philadelphia, 6 to 2. The Chicago team scored their only runs in the first inning and though they made e’even hits to Phil- adelphia’s twelve, were unable to push across another. The Brooklyn-Chicago National league game and Detroit-Boston American games were called because of rain. “Babe” Ruth of the New York Americans is the first major league player to reach the century mark in scoring. Ruth not only scored his 100th run, but crossed the plate a second time, thereby registering 101 times. Rain checks will be good for ad- mittance at the Chicago National park for the first.time in five years today. Sport Notes The annual Thanksgiving Day game between Virginia and North Carolina universities, which is one of 7 the gridiron classics of the south Atlantic section, will be played this year at Chapel Hill. The association of Cowes with yachting goes back many centuries, to the days of Queen Eliza- beth, who had “a pleasure boat” built in the shipyards there. Cowes, how: ever, had little more to do with yacht- ing until the establishment of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1812, and it never really seriously took up the matter untf the golden age of yacht ing, which began about the year 1870. — Bargain day is every day at 234 5.
