Fy Dunn, RRUINS WAGE BATTLE OVER RULE IN ZOO PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 6.—The Polar bear looks lazy and good na- tured and kind hearted. But ts he? Well, not according to the officials of the zoological gardens. Some years ago the local zoo count- ed among its inhabitants a polar bear of average polar bear temper, who grew finally so unmanageable that the officials here traded him to the Bronx 200, New York, for two smaller members of the same species. Newcomer Becomes Boss. At the Bronx zoo, the social system im the polar bear cage is fashionad somewhat after that which used to be accepted by man as efficacious in the prehistoric days when he roamed the earth wearing skins and wielding clubs. That ts to say, the boss of the party is the “old man" who, by his physical prowess, can assert his right to give orders, and to pick and choose his own views. The “old man” polar bear at the Bronx zoo was of temper particularly acrimonious. None dared to lift even so much as a paw in opposition to his verdicts. Then came the rough character from the Philadelphia x00. In one day he cleaned up the “old man” of the Bronx establishment, and he has been the undisputed ruler of the com- munity ever sinc: Raise gelding No Cubs. In November, 1915, Harry and Evelyn, a modest, blushing polar bear bridal couple, were blessed with ® child which Harry absent-mindedly ate for dinner the same day, and as @ result of this experiment, the au- thorities at the local zoo have not gone in for polar bear breeding since. At present there are three polar bears at the gardens, all males. Bo- sides fighting and attempting to eat one another, they like to swim and flop about in the big tank in their cage. They spend as many as elgh- teen hours a day either in the water or throwing one another in the water, according to the keepers. Among the many animals recefved recently at the local zoo are a Persian wild ass, a palt of anoas, or “celebes buffaloes,” and a cape hunting dog from South Africa, which arrived June 14. A tree willady, a member of the kangaroo family, and a lion tall macaque were received on June 11. esha SUMMARY OF RIGHT NEWS PARIS.—Le Matin reports that the Angora government has decided not to demobilize the Turkish army until the allied troops have definite- ly evacuated the Dardanelles terri- tory and Constantinople, DUESSELDORF.— The Germans Joined the French in condemning the throwing of the hand grenade at a military band Saturday, but the penalties closing all restaurants and theatres at 10 o’alock and es- tablishing a curfew at 11 will be continued. MANILA, P. L—Filipinos threw stones at the hotel where George Walker and R. Bradford Hardon, American sugar men, were staying Saturday night, as a protest of the sale of Philippine sugar centrals to outside capitalists.
