PAGE TEN. CASPER MOUNTAIN ROAD SHOWS AVERAGE GRADE OF 5.9 DEGREES An average grade of 5.9 degrees has been established on the road that leads to the top of Casper mountain, according to data taken Sunday by Charles B. Stafford, secretary of the Casper Chamber of Commerce. Mr, Stafford started his computation at Montgomery hill which has a grade of eight degrees. The grade was then taken every half-mile until the car was four miles out of the city after which it was recorded for every tenth of a mile as well as for the turns of the road. The steepest grade of 13 degrees was found just before reaching the Wyland turn- ground. Inspiration point is nearly level, with a grade of only 1 degree. ‘The grade as taken by the secre- tary should not be confused with a percent grade. The degrees were found by means of an tnstrument at- tached to the car and which showed the angle to which the machine was fnclined at any time. Gallon Hats In Vogue As Rodeo Opens In keeping with the western {dea that attends Rodeo week in Casper many people are taking advantage of the opportunity to become west- ern in costume as well as in spirit, As result the merchants have been called on for gallon hats, fancy scarfs, shirts, etc. The gallon hat is an especially popular regalia et this time. The iad has been started and should be taken up by everyone who desires to get the most out of Rodeo week. There is nothing so typical of the western cowboy, the man who has ridden the range as is the tall peaked het. Even those who have chosen to disdain the so-called “Montgomery Ward" cowboy have never failed to look on the hat with respect. ‘The source of the gallon hat was & practical one. It was the best kind of headgear to ride the windy prairie, for it would stick on the head and would not be continually flapping in the wearer's face. Its dignity has also appealed to those who have worn it, and although not quite ¢0 necessary as the steel hel- met worn in the days of chivalry, it was still important from the standpoint that many men quick with a gun enjoyed shooting a hole through a man’s hat. With such @ hat as this on the head of the man being shot a there was little danger that his cranium would re- » the force cf the lead.
