SUNDAY, JULY 29, 1923. ‘Che Casper Sundap Worning Critune Theatricals MISS TAYLOR . FINE AS FILM whi PEG,’ REPORT Famous Play Will Be Pre- sented for An Indefinite Kt Run Starting Saturday Laurette Taylor, who won the hearts of a million people with her famous characterization of the de- lightful Peg in J, Hartley Manners’ play, “Peg ’O My Heart,” may again be seen in her celebrated role—this time in screen form. It will be pre- sented at the Wyoming Theatre for an indefinite run starting next Sat- urday and it is a safe assertion that the star has endeared herself even more to the vast American audience which is certain to flock to see the film, As a stage play, “Peg O' My Heart” has had one of the most phenomenal runs in theatrical history It has had had 6,608 rformanoes in the United Tt has been placed in Hngand, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Hawatl, Italy, ‘Czecho Slovakia and Paris. The screen now puts it within the range of enjoyment of people residing in communities not reached by stage; performances. Miss Taylor covers herself with dis- tinction through her sympathetic and tender portrayal of “Peg” in the screen version. Shades of her whim- sical character, never fully developed in the spoken play because of the natural limitations of the theater, are depicted in the celluloid version, and it is the opinion of many who have seen the stage play that the photo- play even excels in charm of charac- terization Miss Taylor’s own inimita- ble Peg of the footlights. Here we see the slighted Irish lass, accustom- ed to happiness in her own humbe! home, faced with misery in the luxur- fous surroundings in which she has been sent to live. We see her caught in the problems of the aristocratic Chichesters; and we see her save her snobbish cousin from a tragic elop- ment. But never have we been so truly happy in the theater as when we watched the delightful scene in which Jerry—Peg’s handsome guardian— tells her how rich she is; how the Chichesters really depended on her for much; and, finally, how much he loved her. This pathetic scene was admirably portrayed by Miss Taylor and Mahlon Hamilton; and it made a lasting impression = those who saw it King Vidor, who directed the pho- toplay, has done well by Hartley Man- ners’ play, Mary O'Hara has provided an ex- cellent adaptation, and the photog- raphy is a decided credit to George BATA og bape 2 AFRICAN WILD _ bilan Ne’er Do Well”; novelty, “The Speed Demon” Thursday and Friday—Mr. and ve At the Rialto. He also has an uncertain ‘temper, ranging to temporary insan!- ty, a‘dislike for white people in gen- eral, a sharp horn situated far for- ward, and a couple of tons of bulk to back it. When he charges, he burns the breeze, and shivering na- tives are plainly to be seen in the foliage of the topmost trees for miles around. But Mr and Mrs, Martin Johnson stood up to a rhino with a motion picture camera and a gun, They stood while the rhino snorted and they stood still while he charged, and mal at the base of the horn with if Mrs, Johnson had not hit the ani- an express bullet, there would have beeg no picture, nor yet any Mr. and Mrs. Martin Johnson, As it is» it is one of the most thril- ling scer@s in thelr adventure film, “Traiig African Wild Animals,” which is being distributed by Metro. It only takes a minute or so to show, and the only unpleasant result was that the rhino suffered from a very bad headache for an hour or so, and doubtless strolled off for medical ad- vice. This is only one of the danger- ous scenes in the film, which by the way, is the first of its kind to be of- fcally endorsed by the American Mu- seum of National History.
