Speculative belief that Premier Baldwin's speech brought the reparation problem a step nearer eolution was ah impor- tant factor tn the day’s buying, Sales approximated 450,000 shares. NEW YIRK, July 18.—Speculative setiment was somewhat unsettled at the opening of today’s stock market, but most of the standard industria, and railtoad stocks tended toward higher ground. Initial gains of 1 to 1% polnts were recorded by Ameircan Car, American Can ana Corn Pro- ducts, while United States steel, Studebaker and American Locomotive opened fractionaly higher. Some of the minor oils were heavy. arly trading was rather with price changes generally unm: portant. There was a moderate de- mand for the steel, equipment and outomotive shares, American Car ex: tending its gain to 2% points and Great Northern Ore and American Locomotive to a point. Famous Players dropped 1%. Demand Ster- latless ing opened slightly higher but the other principal foriegn exchanges were heavy. Improvements !n the technical pos!: tion and the better outlook for an ad- Justmeyt of foreign troubles brought some Diying orders into the market during the first hour. Execution of these orders carried various stocks up a point or two, but as soon as the demand was satisfied, prices fell back, American Car reacted 21% points, and American Can, Baldwin, Studebaker, Pan American “B," and Union Pact. fic, one each. Toward midday prices again stiffened. The dullness was so intense during the forenoon that many ordinarily “active stocks were not dealt in at all, Call money opened at 5 percent. Buythg was more varied in the afternoon, The customary leaders crept up slowly to a parity with their high prices of the forenoon, while a number of less active shares were also strong. Laclede Gas advanced 3 points, Sloss-Sheffield Steel 2%, Stewart Warner 2%, Liggett and My- ere “B" 2%, and Woolworth 2 points. Wilson packing preferred and Omaha eropped to new low levels for the year, with tosses of 4 and 4% points respectively. ‘ The closing was strong. A brisk demand appeared for the railroad Shares in the late dealings. and brought about extensive short cover- ings operations which carried a num- ber of the active shares to nearly four points above yesterday's closing prices. —e Foreign Exchange NEW YORK, July 13.—Foretgn ex- changem irregular.
