PAGE EIGHT DIRIGIBLE TO EXPLORER O BE ARCTIC LINER OF FUTURE, SAYS © N DEPARTURE WISCASSET, Me, June 25.—(By NEA Service}—Tourist trips to the North Pole within 10 years! That's not a hot weather dream but the prediction of Dr. Donald B. MacMillan, foremost Arctic explorer, whose expedition sailed from here for the far north June 23 in the tiny auxiliary schooner Bowddin Naturally, the route will be through the air but Dr. MacMil'an says that only lghtes-than machines, diri- giblea of the Zeppelin type, will be used. “I feel certain,” he says, “that huge airships with ample passenger room and adequate supplies soon will be running on regular schedule to the North Pole, visiting the historic spots where courageous explorers have for- felted their lives in battling the grim north with dogs and sledgesa. Polar Tours Safe “I expect to see these tours adver- tised among the a@fluring appeals to visit the Orient and the Riviera” Also, for this type of aircraft I believe the trips will be comparatively safe, yet there will be the greater thrill of ad- venture, the beckoning of almost un- known territory to add spice to the journey. “On the other hand, I question the value of the present type of heavier- than-air machine for Arctic work. These airplanes need good !anding and taking-off places anG thee are few and far between in the Arctic. It is virtually impossible to land on the nto your te V/oes AUDITORS ©. H. To do markable record of Lieutenants Mac Ready and Kelley in their non-stcp hop was made under nearly ideal con- ditions while Amundsen will face con- ditions so adverse as to deter any- one but a man of his dogged persist ence. “Amundsen has done thres things that no other explorer ever has done. He was the first at the South Pole and he went through the northwest and the northwest passages in the north. Now ‘be is seeking to crown his achievements by being the first man ever to fly to the pole. “Sight as it is, it is his only chance of getting there, for no other man is likely to make the goal with Cogs and sledges as did Poary tn 1909. It was Peary’s life work and even he told me he doubted if he oguld make it again once out of three times No other white man could get the Eoki- him.” Pisto!s, which the international con- ference of police chiefs wish to see prohibited, took their name from the town of Pistoja, in Tuscany, where they were first invented in the fif- teenth centur; oe The word “Jehovah” occurs 6885 times in the Bible. | DOCTORS DRS.
