SECOND NEWS SECTION News Of Casper Dealers Editorial YELLOWSTONE PARK READY FOR BIG TOURIST TRADE THIS YEAR Park Officials Expect 25,000 People to Visit Wyo- ming’s Summer Playground—Facilities Are Unusual For Handling Huge Crowds YELLOWSTONE PARK , Wyoming, June 23.— The great machine which during the summer of 1923 will serve an expected total of 125,000 visitors to, the greatest of the national parks was in readiness for the opening of the season June 20. Rangers, hotel employees, automobile drivers and a great variety of miscellaneous em- ployees in the park had arrived and had been sent to their posts, Managers of the hotels, camps, transportation. stares and photographic establish- ments catering to the needs of travel- ers all have made arrangements for a banner year, and without exception have increased their facilities. The official administration of the Yellowstone National park is under control of the National park service, of which Stephen T. Mather is direc- tor. This service is a branch of the department of the interior. The actual administration is directed by Superin- tendent Horace M. Albright, now serving his fifth year in this im- portant post. He is assisted by As- sistant Superintendent Leroy Hill. purchasing and Cisbursing officer; As- sistant Superintendent C. A. Lindsley, portmaster, and a’so in charge of information; Chief Engineer A. W. Burney, Chief Ranger S. T. Woodring, and Chief Clerk P. E. Bilkert. Park headquarters is maintained at Mammoth Hot Springs, where there is a large corps of engineers, admin- istrative assistants and clerks. The headquarters is in regular confact with 22 ranger stations scattéred through the park, where 72 assistants already are on duty. This large and well-trained staff assures not only the care and preservation of the park, but adequate service to visitors in the park in many matters, The ideal of seryice has been impressed upon ry park employee, and all have leen reminced that the function of the park is to eater to the happiness of the people who visit it and to guide their actions accordingly. A large organization under direc- tion of the chief engineer is devoted to the maintenance of park highways. |'Thore are 27 road camps and sprinkl- ing stations. During the summer 107 |miles of road are sprinkled twice daily jat hours which cause the least incon- |venience to travel, Equipment in- cludes two motor-driven and 18 Horse- drawn sprinkling wagons. Roads maintained are 298 within the park and 58 outsice. There are about 350 men engaged in the upkeep of park improvements besides the administrative and pro- tective forces. About 1800 men and women are in the employ of government and public utilities within the park in the season, About 250 of the great yellow 10- passenger cars of . the Yellowstone \Park Transportation company will ‘serve visitors to the park this sum- mer. Thirty-five of thene cars were added to the fleet this season, and |the older cars all have been thoroughly overhauled and painted during the winter. The big fleet was mobilized at Mammoth Hot Springs last week but ndw has been split up, various cars being assigned to the various routes. | All the big hotels of the Ye!low- |stone Park Hotel company are in readiness for the opening. These hotels are situated at Mammoth Hot |Springs, Old Faithful, the Lake, an¢: \the Grand Canyon. Extensive addi- tions have beer made at the Lake Hotel, where there are 119 additional rooms this year, A new emplcyees’ dormitory at Old Faithful will permit ,the accommodation of 58 additional tourists. Management of the hotels has predicted a substantial increase in attendance at the park this summer.
