SHELBY, June 21.—(By T rations to handle the influx of he Associated Press).—Prepa- fight fans expected here July 4 to witness the heavyweight championship contest between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons were nearing completion today under the direction of the chamber of commerce and officials of the boom town. 15T acres with accommodations 3.000 cars is being laid out, The town has approximately 2,000 regidents living in tents, several thou- ind. more in tiny one and two-room Shacks and a few hundred in the sub- stantial residences built before Shel- by éxperienced its oi! boom. A special fire brigade is being or- ganized to minimize the danger of fire nmong the hundreds ef flimsy woode shacks or the inflammable canva tents, or even in the big wooden shell in which the July 4 contest will be staged. Fifty men to man the city fire fighting appartus, consisting of four hose carts will be, available for that duty. In case the jail, which has a capacity of ten persons becomes crowded the overflow will be incarcerated in a stockade now under construction in which 200 may be im- prisoned if necessary. To accommo- date the anticipated crowd, town offi- cials and the chamber of commerce have expanded the water system from Ni00.000 to 700,000 gallons capacity, in- creased electric ‘ighting facilities five times, mappes out a sanitary pro- gram and arranged for policing by additional sheriffa on the day of the rt. oe scouts will meet trains and 4 rect travelers to hotels, the arena an: business district. Gibbons’ workout yesterday con- sisted only of bag punching and tug- ging contests with his sparring gmates. He has some sores on his lip und decided against any boxing for that reason. DEMPSEY REACHES PEAK OF TRAINING GREAT FALLS, Mont., June 21.—(By ‘The Associated Press)—Jack Kearns, manager of Jack Dempsey, evidently is satisfied that the world’s heavy- weight champion has reached the peak of his training grind and soon will be ready to start the process of tapering off. Asked today why the champion limited his boxing to four nds yesterday, Kearns sald. “Dempsey is ready now! Why ould he come out here and work “" ‘his head off every afternoon- I want ‘him to take this training business as he feels. If he fee's like breezing through a light workout, why that will be all right with me. Dempsey knows his condition better than any- body, and nobody can drive him through a long workout if he doesn't think he needs it.” Dempsey 1s looking forward with an anticipatory grin to prospects of boxing with “Big Ben” Wray, 24 years old, who arrived here yesterday from Sayre, Oklahoma, with a crav- ing to trade a few punches. Wray ts 7 feet 2 inches tall or, as he puts it, “six feet fourteen inches,” and hopes to make ring history in the next few months. Two months ago Wray was a cow- poy and oll rigger down in Oklahoma. He never hada glove tied to his wrists. ‘Three weeks ago he slammed a knockout punch on Tex McCarthy's chin and when Tex, a fairly good heavyweight, came to, his first act was to sign as Wray’s manager. Pre- vious to knocking out McCarthy, “Big Ben” had three fights. They all end- ed within four rounds with Wray look “tpg down seven feet two inches to where the prostrate forms of his vic: tims decorated resined canvas. Cal Morris, the Sapulpo giant and original white hope, was stopper in four rounds. Wray has a phenomenal reach of 87 inches and tips the beam at 250 pounds. Previous to the last 30 days of training he scaled 291 pounds. What a killing punch from Dempsey's shoulders might do to his pride and joy is the least of McCar- thy's troubles. “T've boxed with Dempsey,” Me. Carthy said today, “long before he was champion and I’ve boxed with this boy. Wray is no boxer yet, but he is game and has a wallop that will knock your shoes off. You can't hurt him. I can hit, but every one T landed on him just bounced off and he grinned. “What he needs is experience. Dempsey will give it to him. He may get knocked over but he'll get up.” Dempsey boxed four rounds in the old dance pavilion yesterday while the lightning flashed and rain came own in torrents in the worst storm this city has experienced in years. He looked faster than on the previous day and his cold has responded to treatment #o that it made little dif ference in his breathing. Bill Wolpin, a 170 pounder from Appleton, Wis- consin, and ambitious new sparring mate, was on the floor thre times in two rounds, . ee Windsor rockers and chairs in Eng lsh brown mahogany and walnut fin ishes, just recelved; prices from $16.26 to $35. While many battles for the heavy- weight championship have been staged during the last 31 years, the netual change of title has passed in only the following fights: Sullivan to Corbett; Corbett to Fitzsimmons; Fitzsimmons to Jeffries; Jeffries to Burns by default; Burns to Johnson; Johnson to Willard; Wil- lard to Dempsey. James J. Corbett wrested the crown from the brow of John L. Sullivan at New Orleans on Septemben 7, 1892, knocking the yeteran out in the twenty-first round. Gentleman Jim’? Corbett held title to the heavyweight championship for five years, and then lost it to Bob Fitzsimmons by a knockout in the fourteenth round at Carson City, ‘Nev., March 17, 1897. The lanky Bob held the title for only two years, being knocked out by James J. Jeffries in the eleventh round at Coney Island, N. ¥., June 9, 1899. Burns defended his claim against! « Johnson at Sydney, Australia on December 26, 1908, and was defeated! in the fourteenth round by the colored | fighter on a technical knock out.
