C., Mat 7.— The recent death of Senator Knute Nelson, of Minnesota, leaves Wyo- ming in possession of the only seat in the United States senate occu- pied by a Civil war veteran, in the person of Senator Francis E, Warren. ‘When Senator Warren first came to Congress, Civil war vetei were the rule rather than the ception. Now only three veterans of that war are left as members of the 68th Congress, the two in the House of Representatives be- ing Isaac R. Sherwood of Ohio, a federal brigadier general, and Charles M. Stedman of North Caro- lina, a Confederate major, who sur- rendered with Lee's army at Ap- Pomattox. General Sherwood ts 88 years old, and Major Stedman, 82 both, therefore, much older than Senator Warren, who went into the service when a mere lad. A atrange coincidence is the fact that Private Knute Nelson, of the 4th Wisconsin infantry, and Pri- vate Francis E. Warren, of the 49th Massachusetts infantry, were both members of the besieging or- ganization that attacked Port Hud- son, Louisiana, in 1863, where Nel- son was wounded and taken prisoner by the Confederate forces, and where Warren won the con- gressional medal of honor) for gal- lantry on the field of battle, Both young soldiers were later promoted to non-commissioned rank. “Dirt Farmer’ Being Boomed For President TOPEKA, Kan., May 1.—(United Press)— A Kansas “dirt farmer” can: didate for president of the United States was Kansas’ newest political sensation tonight when Iorest ther of Cimarron, forr.cr chairman of the Democratic State Central committee and one of the younse!
