PAGE SIX BIRD FLIGHTS ARE EXGELLED (Continued from Page One.) | attempting to establish a new record for duration of flight and an attempt ; to fly around the world. The plane they flew into San Diego | yesterday was the same they had| used in two previous attempts to cross the American continent with-| out a stop, the first which was halted by a fog which prevented them from | finding their way through the moun- tain passes cast of here, and the sec- ond of which terminated through failure of their engine at Indianapolis last November. Both these attempts, however, re sulted in record performances, for the aviators turned the first one into an attempt for a record for sustained flight. They circled above San Diego and !ts environs for 35 hours, 18 min- utes and 88 seconds, exceeding by more than nine hours the best pre vious mark. Official, acceptance of the mark as an international record was withheld becaus> of technicalities though there was no question that the aviators had remained aloft for the time stated. The second attempt also had its start from Rockwell F In it the filers drove eastward far as In dianapolis, where they landed only after they had used everything avail- able in the plane to keep their engine cool, even pouring into its riadator system the milk and coffee from their provisions to replace the water that had leaked out through cracks in the engine's cylinder jackets. The aviators were given such a greeting here on their arrival as comes to few men. San Diegans, one by nativity and the other by. adop- tion, the city took them to her heart with unanimous acclaim. Although the big T-2 landed in the middle of the field the crowd that gathered was so large and pressed so close to the aviators that by the time Major Henry A Arnold, commanding officer of the field arrived he had to fight his way through. ‘you have accomplished the im. possible,” Major Arnold declared in his enthusiasm and his words found echoes from every quarter of the country in telegrams, including one from President Harding which read: “You have written a new chapter in the triumphs of American avia- tion.” Both the aviators were in good physical condition when they landed. Except for a few spatterings of oil from the Liberty engine that had brought them a greater distance than any persons haye ever flown pre viously 4 > continuous flight they were seemingly as fresh on landing as if they had taken an hour’s jaunt. They began ling newspaepr men how they planed to try for new and more difficult records. The story of the flight was told by the men o made it in a matter of fact way with first one and then the other putting in a sentence or a word to illumina ternately There was start when hangars at 1 were missed only by inches. There was difficulty fn getting the motor’s full power into play for the first few hundred miles and the thrill MacReady described when they ran into a mammoth beacon light at Belleville, Iil., pierc- ing the clouds and darkness to guide them on their way. There was the danger of the desert in Arizona, nemesia of aviators in the past where landig in the daytime is dangerous and at night most likely fatal. And then San Diego, like a miniature paradise on a bay of the Pacific ocean in southern California—home. A flight finished. A record made Baths, food and cigarettes. One note of anxiety was in the story. That remained from the fear while over New Jersey that the voltage regula tor of their ignition system would force them to land. MacReadey re- paired it. ‘The airplane hed about 40 gallons of gasoline left in its tanks when it landed, out of the 725 gallons it took at the start. The plane was the same the filers had used in earlier attempts to fly across the continent but the motor was different. The motor used is a 400 horsepower standard com pression Liberty. To this type of motor aviation officers ascribe thé success of the filght, that is, next to the grit and flying ability of the two Ueutenants. Major Arnold declared the record set by Kelly and MacReady demon. strated the feasibility of commercial air lines across the continent. Pas sengers he said, could be carried a distance in one day which the fastest passenger trains require five to cover. 2 The two aviators, as a result of their new record, are richer’ $2,500 each. A telegram from Major Gen- eral Mason Patrick, chief of the air service informed them that Col Franklin R. Kenney, a former air service officer, had won a wager of ‘NEW PRODUCT - CONQUERS PYORRHEA Scientific Remedy Ig Sold ‘on Strict Money-Back" Guarantee, With tite discovery of a new remedy called “Pyro-form,” Pyorrhea, which *was long believed to be incurable, ha at last been mastered. Tho leutenants replied: “Accept with pleasure if it is not a dream. You know us lteutenants.” Both airmen were enthusiastic in thelr praise o {the weather bureau for its accurate forecast of what con- ditions might be encountered on the trip. “We are indebted to a marked de- sree,”* said Kelly, “to the weather bureau for the success of our flight. The help of the efficient meteoroio- gists was a feature of our flight.” Kelly and MacReady were guests of honor last night at a dinner given by the American Legion post of San Diego. Major Theodore MacAulay, who was one of the first men to fly across the continent, ‘though his flight was not a non-stop one, pre- sided as head of the post. Major MacAulay now is retired. ASSOCIATION FAILS TO ACCEPT RECORD. WASHINGTON, May 4.—Head; quarters of the National Aeronautic association announced todey that be- cause of a technicality it could not fully recognize the non-stop distance record set by Lieutenants Kelly and MacReady in their flight from New York to San Diego. It was explained that although there was no disposition to discredit the feat of the two aviators, the regu- lations of the association require tha in every official test the plane must return to its original base. Officials said steps would be taken to modify the rules so that similar situations will not aris —— ee CARD OF THANKS.
