NEW YORK, April 24.—Operations in today’s stock market were on a reduced scale. The effect on sentl- ment of an extension of the price cut ting in tho of] fleld was largely neu tralized by higher prices for other commodities including steel and sug ar. Early gains of 1 to 2 points were modifieaq somewhat before renewed buying stiffened prices in the final hour, Sales approximated 650,000 shares. NEW YORK, April 24.—The short covering movement which was in progress yesterday was continued at the outset of today’s dealings in the stock market, prices of the usual leaders opening at slightly higher levels. Activity was greatest In the domestic oil shares and there was a continuance of the recent buying of the food issues. Corn Products Started one point higher but Phillips Petroleum was only up % despite th: declaration of a 50 cent stock divi. dend and an extra cash dividend of one per cent. When the initial rise failed to bring out any of the stocks which were bought for sunporting purpos: in y erdi market, traders b me more confident, as to the imme- te course of prices and purchased quite liberally in all quarters of the ist. Outstanding strong features In cluded motor, food, merchandise and independent steel shares, Colorado Fuel gained 2% points, Gimbel Broth- ers 1% and Pullman, New York Dock. Whi Motor and Punta Alegre sugar dis one each. The customary profit tak ing when the gocd news was, out oc curred in Phillips Petroleum, that stock falling back 14% points from its r price. The feature of the early dealing in foreign exchange was as se in French francs which moved 8 points to 6.75 cents. De- mand sterling was up fractionally being quoted at $4.64%. Emphatic gains were made by a number of industrials and specialties during the morning's trading in stock Reports of increases in the price of steel products and expecta- tions of further rises in raw and re fined sugar prices encouraged buying. There was a brisk inquiry also for the usual favorites, including the oll. rubber and tobacco stocks. Shares of companies doing business in Mexico were benefitted by optimistic reports of negotiations looking to the recognition of Mexico by this govern ment. Ratflroad shares were quiet but New York Central and Pittsburgh and West Virginia recorded moderate gains. Colorado Fuel and Kinney were pushed up three points, and gains of 2 to 2% were recorded by Goodyear Rubber, Postum Cereai Woolworth, May Department Stores and DuPont. Call money opened at 4% per cent. Speculative buying _ operations paused generally in the early after- noon following the reductions in Ohio, Wyoming and Louisiana crude oil prices. Phillips Petroleum extend- ed its decline to almost three points whlie Fisher Body made a perpendicu- lar drop of 10 points. Several of the less active shares forged steadily up- ward, Goodyear Rubber, Colorado Fuel and American Chicle preferred, gaining four points and Fleischmann twe. The closing was firm. Speculative sentiment was more hopefully dis posed in the late dealings, oll shares moving up briskly under the leader ship of Standard O11 of Callfornia, which advanced 2% points, Ameri can Can and Iron Products also were conspicuously strong, Porto Rican Tobacco jumped nine points, <t SS t cabs were first introduced to the pub lo in London, in honor of the birth day of K’ng George IV.
