Over Objection: Pe ASHINGTON, c., Jan. 10— + Aacormsriad Harding's recent veto of e Bursum pension bill proposing among others increases of civil and Mexican war veterans’ pensions from $50 to $72 a month and of their wid- ows from $30 to $50, was deplored in! an address to the senate by Sen- stor Cursum, Republican, New Mex- ico, c.zirman of the senate pensions | commi:tee. Senator Bursum announce ea he would not attempt to have the bill pessed over the veto because, he said, it would “not result in any ac- complishment.’ ; The New Mexico senator declared the president hac givtn try unwittingly, an er Pression of the bill and er! Msions which Senator Bursum sald were not contained in it. The presi-| dential veto, he declared would “dis- Sppoint' many aged veterans and widows who are undoubtedly in dis- tress and in great need of the int crease which the bill would have} given them.” ‘I cannot help but feel that this is a harsh message, a cruel message,” | said Senater Bursum, “I am unab‘e to make myself be-| Meve that a patriotic, appreciative, | kindly character like Mr. Harding,| if in possession of all the facts and| circumstances surrounding perhaps 7% per cent of the beneficiaries under the propvsed bill, would have given| expression to such p sweeping con- demnation of every item that the bill stands for.”” President Harding's alleged miere- Presentation of the bill, Senator Bur- sum said, was in stating that it pro- posed pension increases for widows who had “‘cohabited” for two years with a veteran before his death. “This is a serious charge and un- fortunate,” he declared, “If it were true certainly would merit a censure for attempting to encourage” the loosening of the morals of the coun- try. No such provisions as-are quot- ed in the message are found in the bill, In view of the error contained * © © 4t seems to me that some-| one has been ‘loose’ outside of con-| gress. In my opinion the president should correct this erroneous tm- pression given the public which has heen broadcast to the country on account of the erroneous quotation contained in the message.’* Senator Bursum also challenged | the president's statement that the Dill cost would be $108,000,000 addi- | tional on the pension rolls for the next year, The increased cost, he contended, would be only $72,608,000, and considering the Yeath rate of veterans, he ad*** within two years the total additional dost woulé have “vanisited.”” . “The prediction of a $50,000,000,000 outlay within the next fifty years,"| Senator Bursum) continued, ‘ woud! seem shooting -far from the mark of reason, Fifty-eight vears have elaps- ed since the civil war ended. If the veterans and wilows of other wars are required to walt fifty-eight years before obtaining similar rates of pen sions provided in the bill, there can be no justification to expect a $50.- 900,000,000 outlay unless we unfortu- nately become involved,in other wars | which are not now foreseen.” ‘The financial considerations given by the president, -he sald, appeared to be “a onesidec picture and an argument yy opposing counbkel.” Incapacitated veterans, he de-| clared, already recelve $72 and most | of the remaining veterans were rap-| idly reaching the condition which | entitied them to the $72 rate with: out new legislation. VAUDEVILLE AT IAS 1S GOOD Gene Metcalfe sprung a surprise on the patrons of the Iris theatre last} night. His act, which consists of a few of the best songs is well worth attending for comparison of his voice with the acknowledged great voices of the country. Metcalfe is extremely good at imitating the singing of such well known persons as Geraldine Farrar and others. Some clever and“difficult balancing feats are gone through with by the Max Freehand duo. Standing on five chairs placed in a tower one on top of the other, and from this precarious | position swinging freely in easy form is not the easiest thing in the world It is one of the tricks of the duo. | The Tropical trio give some good} imitations of Hawalian music. One of the members works up a great of applause from the = nee by her | hula dance “ach is and rhyth mical. She also sings a song or two that gets over in good shape. DeLoach and Corbin are good. The act includes a blackface and a young lady in singing, patter, and dancing. Both members of the duo are very entertaining. The picture “Glass Houses” with Viola Dana needs no recommenda tion to persons who have seen the talented actress in other productions, § Dr KINGS PILLS —for constipation ° Maybell Griffen, Faltimore beauty, has been asked by the United! States to pay an income tax on her beauty, according to news dispatches. ‘The income tax is being levied on a $500-beauty prize and a gown, worth | $1000, given to her by a Baltimore department store, She contends ‘ the dress was a gift, Authorities say it was something earned by 3 talized beauty. ORIGINAL FORGE OF BOOTH TARKINGTON'S STORY 1$ RETAINED 1N “THE FLIRT,” COMING TO THE WYOMING The remarkable insight into hu- man nature possessed by Booth Tarkington, whose master pen has kept the present generation iaugh- ing an¢ crying for the past ten years, was never better shown than when he wrote ‘The Flirt.” When the Universal-Jewsl produ- gers took this story which will come to the Wyoming next month, and made it up. into eight reels of comedy, drama, and near-tragedy for the. benefit of the theater-go- ing public, the persons behind the picturized production \of it did every:thing possible to’ retain the original force of the story and the original viewpoint of the author. “Tho Flist’ is, a gor laid in not too large a town, dealing with what may be considered a typical ‘American family, not that every American family is like Man- dersons but there good many American fam There. is a father wi ana night to pr with the things } to have. No extremes have been aimed at, It would be impossibl for critic to point his finger at a character or situation and say that the»whole picture would have been improved by an_ elimination or substitution, by a pepping up of MOTHERS, DO.
